William Prentice, a professor of exercise and sport science, has been recognized by the United States Sports Academy for his contributions and achievements in sports medicine.
Prentice is the 2014 recipient of the Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award, which will be presented at a ceremony in November.
Prentice has served as the program director of UNC’s Post-Professional Athletic Training Education Program, accredited by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), since 1980.
He is the author of 45 editions of nine different textbooks and has published more than 95 journal articles and abstracts. Prentice served as the athletic trainer for the women’s soccer program at UNC for 26 years beginning in 1980. During that period, the team won 17 NCAA and one AIAW national championship.
In 2004, he was inducted into NATA’s Hall of Fame, and in 2006, the association established the William E. Prentice Scholarship that is presented annually in his honor.
The role of the nonprofit United States Sports Academy is to prepare men and women for careers in the sports profession.
