Editor’s note: The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham won the 2017 National Ethics Bowl competition. This was the largest competition to date, with 3,924 students from 413 teams representing 281 schools competing in 32 regionals from September to March before the national championship.
The fifth annual National High School Ethics Bowl will bring 24 teams from across the United States to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on April 8 and 9, 2017.
Hosted by The Parr Center for Ethics in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, students will exercise their philosophical and ethical muscles as they analyze topical issues. During the two-day event, all teams will compete in four rounds of competition. This is the largest National High School Ethics Bowl to date: 3924 students from 413 teams representing 281 schools competed in 32 regionals from September to March for their chance to compete in the national championship.
During the two-day event, all teams will compete in four rounds. Cases and questions are developed under the guidance of the Parr Center and cover a broad range of topics including drone warfare, overpopulation, standing up against hateful speech, and gender in sports.
The performance of each team is judged on the basis of how clearly, articulately, and perceptively the students develop the positions they decide to take; their ability to communicate respectfully and collaboratively; and their willingness to take diverse viewpoints into account.
The National High School Ethics Bowl is supported by the Parr Center for Ethics, Marc Sanders Foundation, Fenwick Foundation, Howell Family Foundation, BB&T Wealth, UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, UNC’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and the Department of Philosophy.
