An entertaining look at the history of the city and regional planning department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be the focus of an event Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. in Gerrard Hall.
The department, in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, was the seventh university planning program in the country and the first to be based in the social sciences.
A new book, “The School that Jack Built,” by Edward J. Kaiser ’66 and Karla Rosenberg ’12, celebrates the beginning of the department in 1945 on a university campus with no architecture or engineering program. Observations and anecdotes by alumni and faculty are sprinkled in the margins of the book, along with 100 photos of people, occasions and places.
Alumni panel members Jonathan Howes ’61, David Godschalk ’64, George Williams ’68, Deborah Warren ’74, Ben Hitchings ’97 and Christy Raulli ’10 will lead the discussion, which is free to the public.
