Academic advisers at UNC were recently recognized with national and campus advising awards.
Three academic advisers in the College of Arts and Sciences have won 2013 national advising awards for making significant contributions to the advancement of academic advising.
The awards will be presented by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) at its annual conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, Oct. 6-9.
National Winners:
Roger Kaplan, senior adviser in fine arts and humanities, is a winner in the Outstanding Primary Adviser role. Joy Renner, faculty adviser in natural sciences and mathematics, is a winner in the Outstanding Faculty Adviser role. Melissa Edwards, senior adviser in social and behavioral sciences, won a certificate of merit in the Outstanding New Adviser role.
Six academic advisers were also honored April 23 with UNC campus advising awards.
For 2013 UNC advising awards, the winners are:
The Minor Mickel-Shaw Excellence in Advising Award (presented to advisers in the Academic Advising Program):
- Carolyn Covalt, senior academic adviser, social and behavioral sciences.
- Deborah Graczyk, academic adviser, natural sciences and mathematics.
- Dennis Soberl, academic adviser, social and behavioral sciences.
The Class of 1996 Award for Advising Excellence (presented to advisers from academic departments, professional schools and Academic Advising):
- Gregory Gangi, associate director, Institute for the Environment.
- Meredith Petschauer, senior lecturer, exercise and sport science.
- Deborah Stroman, lecturer, exercise and sport science.
NACADA was chartered in 1979 to promote quality academic advising to ensure the educational development of students. Since that time, it has grown to more than 11,000 members.
The three new national winners bring the total to 26 academic advisers at UNC who have been honored by NACADA in the past six years.
