The UNC-Chapel Hill student organization Musical Empowerment is hosting its first annual benefit concert, “Melodies,” at 7 p.m. April 18 at the University United Methodist Church in downtown Chapel Hill.
Performers include Joe Kwon and Paul Defiglia of the Avett Brothers, UNC-Chapel Hill student a cappella groups, and local bands Morning Brigade, Clockwork Kids and the Carolina Ukulele Ensemble.
“Melodies,” will build upon Musical Empowerment’s mission to connect UNC students to the youth of the local community by taking the student teacher/mentee relationship from the rehearsal room to center stage. Concert guests will see inspiring performances by three students in the program.
Musical Empowerment is a student-run organization at UNC that pairs children from the local Chapel Hill-Carrboro area with UNC students who volunteer their time by providing free music lessons. Music teachers and social workers in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System identify and refer students who have the potential to benefit from the program. Established in 2002, Musical Empowerment now offers over 50 weekly lessons at University United Methodist Church.
Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. All proceeds from the event will support Musical Empowerment’s Instrument Lending Program. Founded in 2012, the program provides a library of loaner instruments to students.
