Sociologist Guo appointed to NIH study section
UNC sociologist Guang Guo has been appointed to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study section — Social Sciences and Population Studies — of the Center for Scientific Review.
Guio is the George and Alice Welsh Distinguished Professor in the department of sociology. He also is a faculty fellow in the Carolina Population Center and the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences.
Members appointed to the study section are selected based on competence and achievement in their scientific disciplines as well as the quality of their research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other activities, achievements and honors.
According to Tony Scarpa, the director of the Center for Scientific Review, membership in a study section provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. Study sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.
Guo’s research bridges the social science perspective and the genetic perspective. He is interested in and has published on the topic of:
- The interactions between genetic influences and social context such as peers, families, neighborhoods and schools with respect to demographic and other social/health behaviors;
- Estimating the influences of social/environmental factors controlling for genetic factors; and
- Methodologies that use twin/sibling data and DNA data.
