David Moreau, former chair of the curriculum in environment and ecology and a professor of city and regional planning, had a statewide environmental stewardship award created in his honor.
Moreau was honored by the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources at a reception July 10. The Dr. David H. Moreau Environmental Stewardship Award will be conferred annually by the secretary of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources “to honor outstanding contributions and excellence in the protection and conservation of North Carolina’s water, air, and land resources in service to the people of North Carolina.”
Moreau was the inaugural recipient of the award for his 19 years of service and leadership, including time as both member and chair, of the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission. The Environmental Management Commission acknowledged his leadership on 23 separate actions of the commission for protection of water quality, groundwater, wetlands, water resource protection and allocation, and protection of air quality.
Moreau had previously been awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his service to the people of North Carolina.
He has teaching and research interests in water resources and environmental management. He worked on a peer review committee that examined an assessment by federal agencies on performance of the levees around New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
He is former director of the Water Resources Research Institute of the University of North Carolina system.
