Students from across North Carolina come to UNC-Chapel Hill to discuss complex and timely ethical dilemmas in the seventh annual competition.
The seventh annual North Carolina High School Ethics Bowl will bring 24 teams from across North Carolina to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Jan. 26, 2019. Teams will come from Currituck, Durham, Alamance, Orange and Forsyth counties and beyond. The event is hosted by the Parr Center for Ethics in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences.
Throughout the weekend, over 150 students will collaborate in analyzing timely and challenging ethical dilemmas. This is the largest North Carolina High School Ethics Bowl to date with 24 schools competing for a spot at the nationals, also held at UNC-Chapel Hill in early April.
During the event, all teams will compete in four rounds before the field narrows. Cases and questions are developed under the guidance of the Parr Center for Ethics each year. This year, they cover a broad range of topics including gerrymandering, data violence, gun control and de-extinction.
The performance of each team is judged on the basis of how clearly, articulately, and perceptively the students develop the positions they decide to take; their ability to communicate respectfully and collaboratively; and their willingness to take diverse viewpoints into account.
