Eight students recently received Hogan Book Awards.
The award recipients for this year are Brandon Garcia, Tavien Mapp, Rachel Moore, Michelle Polanco, Manuel Badillo, Lexi Gage Simone Mccluney and Kyle Carroll.
Kelly Hogan, senior STEM lecturer and the director of instructional innovation in the College of Arts and Sciences, and her husband Brian Hogan, research assistant professor in the department of chemistry, are advocates for first generation college student success. The Hogans are the recipients of many teaching and community service awards. Both have also been mentors in various mentoring programs, including the Carolina Covenant, the Carolina Scholars and the Colonel Robinson STEM Scholars. The two created The Hogan Book Award for First Generation College Students in STEM in partnership with Pearson Education.
The award provides the textbook to the introductory science courses to a selected group of first generation college students. As textbooks in STEM disciplines can be among the most expensive, the Hogans created the award to reduce this financial barrier.
Award recipients were asked to write a letter of support to other first generation college students interested in studying STEM disciplines.
