On the eve of her wedding to another man, Mary dreams of meeting a young soldier, their blossoming love and the winds of fate that blew them apart when he went to battle in World War I. Haunting and achingly romantic, in the words of the playwright, “Mary’s Wedding” is “a memorial to both the Great War and Great Love.”
Broadway World called the play a, “wonderfully tender, poignant story of innocent first love and the vicissitudes of fate.” The New York Times said it is, “deeply romantic … goes straight to the heart.”
Chapel Hill native Cody Nickell will direct. He brings a unique perspective to the PlayMakers production, having played the young soldier in the 2003 U.S. premiere of “Mary’s Wedding” at San Jose Repertory Theatre. The actor/director appeared as Hotspur in PlayMakers’ “The Making of a King: Henry IV & V” (2012).
“Mary’s Wedding” is presented as one of PlayMakers’ contributions to the World War I Centenary Project at UNC-Chapel Hill. Among others, post-show discussion participants will include John McGowan, former director of UNC-Chapel Hill’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities who is Ruel C. Tyson Distinguished Term Professor, as well as professor Christopher Armitage — both in the department of English and comparative literature.
