The third annual National High School Ethics Bowl will bring 22 teams from across North America to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 10-11.
Hosted by The Parr Center for Ethics in UNC-Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences, students will exercise their philosophical, analytical thinking and ethical muscles as they address topical issues. Approximately 1,600 students from 238 teams representing 232 schools competed in 22 regionals from September to March for a chance to compete for the national championship, making this the largest National High School Ethics Bowl to date.
During the two-day event, teams will compete in four rounds of competition. Cases and questions will be developed under the guidance of the Parr Center and cover a broad range of topics including “Giving to Panhandlers,” “Cheerleading and Disabilities,” “Offensive Lyric Sing-Alongs,”
“Alternative Beliefs in School” and “Ethical Consumerism.” The performance of each team is judged on the basis of how clearly, articulately and perceptively the students develop their positions on these topics.
The National High School Ethics Bowl is supported by the Parr Center for Ethics, Squire Family Foundation, GlaxoSmithKline, UNC-Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences, the department of philosophy and BB&T Wealth.
