Phillips Ambassadors to study in Asia in spring 2012

Six undergraduates from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been selected as Phillips Ambassadors for spring 2012 study abroad programs in Asia. They will study in China, India and Singapore.

Phillips Ambassadors are selected twice a year and receive up to $7,500 each for a semester or year-long program and up to $5,000 each for a summer program. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and commitment to activities, service and leadership roles in the classroom and community.

National teachers council honors Erika Lindemann

Erika Lindemann, associate dean for undergraduate curricula at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has received the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. Lindemann, who received her master’s and doctoral degrees from Carolina, also is an adjunct professor of English in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences.

President Obama’s former press secretary to speak Sept. 13

Robert Gibbs, former press secretary to President Barack Obama, will discuss “Communicating through the Chaos” of American politics Sept. 13 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Eve M. Carson Memorial Speaker Series will bring Gibbs to campus for the Hunt and Hillard Gold ’39 Lecture. He will speak at 7 p.m.
