Two computer science alums to win Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present computer science alumni Lawrence Kesteloot and Ted Kim with technical achievements awards.

The nine Scientific and Technical Awards do not necessarily represent achievements developed or introduced in 2012; instead, the achievements show a proven record of contributing significant value to making motion pictures.

Kesteloot, who received his master’s in 1995, will be recognized with Drew Olbrich and Daniel Wexler for the creation of the Light system for computer graphics lighting at PDI/DreamWorks. Though in use for 15 years, the Light system continues to be used because of its capabilities, including an emphasis on interactive responsiveness and scalable architecture.

Kim, PhD ’06, will be recognized with Nils Thuerey, Markus Gross and Doug James for the invention, publication and dissemination of Wavelet Turbulence software. The software allowed for fast creation of highly detailed gas simulation, which could be easily controlled by the artist to create the final image.

Kestleloot and Kim will join the 25 individual recipients at the annual Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Feb. 9.
