College recognizes new distinguished professors

Congratulations to the 18 faculty who were recently appointed distinguished professors or distinguished term professors in the College of Arts & Sciences.

“Our extraordinary scholars and teachers are one of Carolina’s greatest strengths,” said Dean Kevin Guskiewicz. “Through their scholarship and creativity, they inspire our students,enhance our knowledge and provide greater understanding to the benefit of North Carolina and the world.”

The 2018 distinguished professors are:

  • Daniel Anderson, department of English & comparative literature, Zachary Smith Term Professorship for Excellence in Undergraduate Education.
  • Kenneth “Andy” Andrews, department of sociology, Phi Delta Theta/Matthew Mason Distinguished Professorship.
  • Anna Bardone-Cone, department of psychology & neuroscience, Bowman & Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professorship.
  • Eric Downing, department of Germanic & Slavic languages & literatures, Gerhard L. Weinberg Distinguished Professorship.
  • Daniel Gitterman, department of public policy, the Duncan McRae ’09 and Rebecca Kyle McRae Professorship.
  • Banu Gökarıksel, department of geography, Caroline H. and Thomas S. Royster Distinguished Term Associate Professorship in Graduate Education.
  • Juan Carlos González-Espitia, department of romance studies, Bowman & Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Associate Professorship.
  • Beth Grabowski, department of art & art history, Kappa Kappa Gamma Distinguished Professorship.
  • Christian Iliadis, department of physics and astronomy, J. Ross Macdonald Distinguished Professorship.
  • Jordynn Jack, department of English and comparative literature, Chi Omega Distinguished Term Professorship.
  • Cecilia Martinez-Gallardo, department of political science, William Wilson Brown Jr. Distinguished Term Associate Professorship in Latin American Studies.
  • Noreen McDonald, department of city and regional planning, Thomas Willis Lambeth Distinguished Professor.
