Economist Michael Salemi will discuss “Debt and Taxes” in a free public talk Sept. 30 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Salemi, who will deliver the Cherry Award Lecture, is professor emeritus and former chair of the department of economics in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. The talk, a discussion on economics designed for non-economists, will be at 6 p.m. in Chapman Hall, room 211.
Salemi was selected as one of three finalists for the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching, a national award sponsored by Baylor University. As part of the award, Salemi will give a lecture at Baylor and at UNC. The winner of the award will be announced in spring 2014.
Salemi, who joined the UNC faculty in 1976, has won a number of teaching awards, including the 2012 Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award from the Southern Economic Association. He received UNC’s Bowman and Gordon Gray Professorship for teaching excellence in undergraduate instruction from 1987 to 1990, and again from 2005 to 2010.
Involved with teacher education since 1974, Salemi has chaired the Committee on Economic Education of the American Economic Association. His recent projects deal with optimal monetary policy, strategies for reforming the college-level principles of economics course, and using discussion of classic and current articles to teach undergraduate economics.
