The Global Area Studies Centers at UNC have launched a redesigned Web site at http://areastudies.unc.edu.
Visitors can learn about the activities of each center, funding opportunities and public outreach programs. Links to all seven centers are available from several entry points. In addition to the portal to each center’s site, three other main areas are featured for users to explore:
1. UNC’s Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) program offers students the opportunity to use world languages in a variety of courses outside the departments of languages and literatures. The site provides enrollment information and course listings, pedagogy training and educational resources.
2. Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) funding is awarded in a competitive process and is open to graduate and advanced undergraduate students to pursue foreign language and area studies for professional purposes. UNC Global Area Studies Centers offer more than 30 academic year and more than 22 summer fellowships each year, providing more than $1 million annually in graduate student support.
3. The Global Music Show is a radio program that focuses on a particular world region each month, integrating both music from that area of the world and relevant expertise from guest scholars at UNC. The broadcast is scheduled for the last Wednesday of every month during fall and spring semesters, from 9 to 10 p.m. Eastern time. A live Internet stream is available from the WXYC Web site, and visitors can listen to more than 50 past broadcasts of the Global Music Show using the archive playlists.
UNC is one of a very few U.S. universities to house several National Resource Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education under the Title VI program. The Global Area Studies Centers cooperate to better serve the University and public by informing them of events, research and funding. The centers provide services and resources for teaching modern foreign language, research and training in area and international studies and instruction and research related to areas of the world and global issues.
