Three UNC students selected for social entrepreneurship fellowships

Three undergraduate students in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences are among six selected by social change organization Frontline Solutions for fellowships this summer. Micah Gilmer, a partner in Frontline Solutions and the social entrepreneur in residence in the department of public policy, helped to spearhead the program.

The Hilliard P. Jenkins (HPJ) Undergraduate Fellowship Program, now in its second year, is an internship opportunity for students with a passion for the fields of social justice and entrepreneurship. HPJ Fellows are placed at one of Frontline’s offices in Durham, N.C.; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Brooklyn, N.Y. The students receive professional development opportunities by working on a variety of high-impact projects.

The UNC students are:

  • Hunter Bruton of Sneads Ferry, N.C., a senior religious studies and political science major, who will join the Durham office.
  • Janae Edwards of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, a May 2011 graduate and international studies and economics double-major, who will join the Brooklyn office.
  • Khayla Deans of Philadelphia, a junior public policy major and African American studies and Spanish minor, who will join the Philadelphia office.

“Working with UNC students here at Frontline is one of the greatest privileges I have at my ‘day job,’” Gilmer said. “We have been privileged the past couple of years to have the best and brightest this great University has to offer, and this year is no exception.”

Before the program ends in August, each fellow will take at least one Frontline-supported work trip and participate in multiple meetings with clients and community partners around the country.
