Gil, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the event is free, but tickets are required. They can be reserved at <a href=\"http:\/\/cpatix.org\">cpatix.org.<\/a>\u00a0<em>(<strong>Please note that Yo-Yo Ma and the other artists are not\u00a0scheduled to perform at the Feb. 26 lecture. They will perform in a sold-out concert Feb. 27 as part of Carolina Performing Arts\u2019 season.)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ma\u2019s multifaceted career is a testament to his\u00a0continual search for new ways to communicate with\u00a0audiences. As an appointed United Nations Messenger\u00a0of Peace, Ma has organized teaching and mentoring\u00a0programs, inspiring students across the world to love\u00a0and honor music. His collaborations go well beyond the traditional boundaries of classical music; most notably with his Silk Road Project, which celebrates the universality of music itself.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9780\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9780\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/01\/Silk-Road-Ensemble-Image-09-credit-Jennifer-Taylor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9780\" src=\"\/\/casdev.unc.edu\/collegearchive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/01\/Silk-Road-Ensemble-Image-09-credit-Jennifer-Taylor-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The Silk Road Ensemble (photo by Jennifer Taylor)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Silk Road Ensemble (photo by Jennifer Taylor)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Made up of performers and composers from more than 20 countries, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silkroadproject.org\/\">Silk Road Ensemble<\/a> was formed under the artistic direction of Ma in 2000. Since then, audiences and critics in over 30 countries throughout Asia, Europe and North America have embraced these artists who are passionate about cross-cultural understanding and innovation. The Silk Road Ensemble has been called \u201cvibrant and virtuosic\u201d by The <em>Wall Street Journal,<\/em> \u201cone of the 21st century\u2019s great ensembles\u201d by The <em>Vancouver Sun<\/em>\u00a0and a \u201croving musical laboratory without walls\u201d by The <em>Boston Globe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ma comes to campus as the 2015 Frey Foundation Distinguished Visiting Professor.<\/p>\n<p>The Frey Foundation Professorship was established in 1989 in the College to bring distinguished leaders from government, public policy, international affairs and the arts to campus.
