{"id":9596,"date":"2014-12-22T09:04:40","date_gmt":"2014-12-22T14:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=9596"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:46:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:46:04","slug":"jerusalem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=9596","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers continues PRC2 season with \u2018Wrestling Jerusalem\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/\/college.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1224\/2014\/12\/PlayMakersposterPRCWrestlingJerusalem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9597 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/PlayMakersposterPRCWrestlingJerusalem.jpg\" alt=\"PlayMakersposterPRCWrestlingJerusalem\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>PlayMakers Repertory Company will present the regional premiere of \u201cWrestling Jerusalem,\u201d written and performed by Aaron Davidman, Jan. 7-11.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers is the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers brings Davidman\u2019s acclaimed one-man show to the Triangle as part of its PRC<sup>2 <\/sup>series. PRC\u00b2 features innovative, topical presentations coupled with engaging and insightful post-show discussions with the creative artists and expert panelists following each performance.<\/p>\n<p>Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. nightly and 2 p.m. on Jan. 11 in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Ticket prices start at $15 and may be purchased at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmakersrep.org\/\">www.playmakersrep.org<\/a> or by calling (919) 962-PLAY (7529). Tickets are also still available as part of PlayMakers subscription packages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWrestling Jerusalem\u201d grapples with identity, history and social justice, exploring the competing narratives at the center of the Palestinian\/Israeli conflict that has lasted generations. TheSan Francisco Chronicle calls it a \u201cremarkable solo performance\u201d [of] \u201cyearning beauty \u2026 deep sadness and wistful hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davidman describes it as following one man\u2019s travels to Israel and Palestine \u201cto try to understand the nuance and complexity that lives in the hearts of the human beings at the center of the conflict. Part personal memoir, part transformational theater, in addition to myself, I play 17 different characters whom I meet along the way, each with his own story and perspective to share.\u201d<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2007, PlayMakers staged \u201cWhen the Bulbul Stopped Singing,\u201d an examination of the Palestinian\/Israeli divide viewed from the perspective of a Palestinian civil\/human rights lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, especially given recent events in Gaza, it is important to once again look at this area of the world, this time through the lens of a Jewish artist\/activist,\u201d said PlayMakers producing artistic director Joseph Haj. \u201cI have known Aaron Davidman for many years, and his deep-thinking, honest attempt to understand the situation gives another voice and perspective to one of the world\u2019s thorniest issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with Roger Guenveur Smith\u2019s \u2018Rodney King,\u2019 which we presented in September only a few weeks after the events in Ferguson, Mo., it is my hope that the theater can be a place for community dialogue, increased tolerance and healing \u2014 a safe environment in which to have difficult conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out this season\u2019s PRC<sup>2<\/sup> lineup will be \u201cMary\u2019s Wedding\u201d by Stephen Massicote (April 29-May 3), a tale of young love on the eve of The Great War. \u201cMary\u2019s Wedding\u201d is one of PlayMakers\u2019 contributions to UNC\u2019s commemoration of the centenary of World War I.<\/p>\n<p>Next on PlayMakers\u2019main stage is \u201cTrouble in Mind\u201d by pioneering African-American playwright Alice Childress (Jan. 21-Feb. 8).<\/p>\n<p>Based in UNC\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences, PlayMakers is the Carolinas\u2019 premier resident professional theater company.
