Carlyle Sitterson Professor of History in UNC&#8217;s College of Arts and Sciences, is a leading scholar on Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations. P\u00e9rez is contributing extensively to the global discussion on the re-opening of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo speak to Cuba is to speak to Latin America,\u201d P\u00e9rez wrote in a December 18, 2014, op-ed for CNN. The decision to re-open relations with Cuba, P\u00e9rez elaborated, signals the U.S. willingness to respect national sovereignty in a region that continues to grapple with the effects of centuries of colonialism.<\/p>\n<p>He also is director of the<a href=\"http:\/\/isa.unc.edu\/\"> Institute for the Study of the Americas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>P\u00e9rez\u2019s principal teaching fields include twentieth-century Latin America, the Caribbean and Cuba. Among his books are <a href=\"http:\/\/uncpress.unc.edu\/browse\/book_detail?title_id=1535\"><em>Cuba in the American Imagination: Metaphor and the Imperial Ethos<\/em><\/a> (University of North Carolina Press, 2008) and <a href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.unc.edu\/search?R=UNCb6282973\"><em>Cuba: Between Reform and Revolution<\/em><\/a> (Oxford University Press, 2006).
