{"id":9484,"date":"2014-12-05T13:36:34","date_gmt":"2014-12-05T18:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=9484"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:45:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:45:25","slug":"group300","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=9484","title":{"rendered":"Impossible Containment: Art project examines Ebola outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Impossible Containment -- Final Project by ARTS 300 students\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h5r3RTqhHOI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>On the last day of classes, Group 300 \u2013 a collaborative team of UNC students &#8212; performed <em>Impossible Containment <\/em>as part of its final project for a studio art major seminar taught by elin o\u2019Hara slavick.<\/p>\n<p>Performed on Polk Place on Dec. 3, <em>Impossible Containment<\/em> examines themes of security and sanitation within the context of the ongoing Ebola virus outbreak and the media coverage in America.<\/p>\n<p>Around the contamination site, two students dressed as Secret Service agents to ward off the public, as fellow classmates wielding cameras approached curious bystanders for comments and questions. As the Hazmat-suited students collected more pinecones and seedpods \u2014 symbols of the virus \u2014\u00a0 to be \u201csanitized,\u201d other students dispensed more on the lawn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are all these contradictions and paradoxes,\u201d said slavick, Distinguished Term Professor of Art in UNC&#8217;s College of Arts and Sciences. \u201cThey\u2019re dipping these pods in white paint as a sanitation system and placing them in this plastic-covered bamboo dome, which of course would do nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s trying to fight nature with nature,\u201d said John Neville \u201915, of the dome, inspired by neo-futuristic architect Buckminster Fuller\u2019s design. \u201cWe thought it\u2019s nice to try to disguise something that is dangerous in real life as something as harmless as a magnolia pod or pinecone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the middle of campus, passersby quickly noticed the group\u2019s performance; some stopped and asked questions, as others snapped photos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur intention is not to scare; our intention is to have people think and question,\u201d said Neville.<\/p>\n<p><em>Story, photos and video by
