The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has provided $687,929 in scholarships, fellowships and program support to 155 undergraduates for study abroad during 2014 and 2015. Funded by private gifts to the College of Arts and Sciences, the awards enable students to study in other countries for a semester, summer or year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

More than one-third of UNC undergraduates study in other countries before they graduate \u2013 one of the highest study abroad rates among public universities nationwide. The Study Abroad Office in the College offers more than 325 programs in more than 70 countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany Carolina students would not have the opportunity to study abroad without the generous support of our alumni and friends,\u201d said Bob Miles, associate dean for study abroad. \u201cInternational experience sets students apart when they begin searching for work after graduation and benefits them in other academic, cultural, social and personal ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Below are descriptions of study abroad scholarships available through the College and this year\u2019s recipients, listed alphabetically by North Carolina county and other states and countries. Also listed are their study abroad plans and names of the scholarships they received. Students without majors listed have not yet declared majors.<\/p>\n

Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Latin America<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alumna Leslie Benning of\u00a0New York City<\/strong>\u00a0and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The fund supports study abroad in Latin America.<\/p>\n

Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Spain\/Iberian Peninsula<\/strong> Alumna Leslie Benning of\u00a0New York City<\/strong>\u00a0and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003 to support semester or yearlong study abroad programs in Spain or Portugal.<\/p>\n

Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alumnus Michael Boyatt of\u00a0Durham\u00a0<\/strong>established this award in 1996 with his son, alumnus Matthew, also of\u00a0Durham<\/strong>. This merit award funds study abroad by undergraduates majoring in global studies or history.<\/p>\n

Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program<\/strong> Funded by a generous gift in 2005 from the Twelve Labours Foundation, the program provides scholarships for 25 rising sophomores to participate in an eight-week academic program in Singapore and Thailand, designed as an introduction to Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

James R. Copland III London Honors Scholars Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n

Established by James R. Copland IV to honor his father, this fund supports students in the London honors semester abroad.<\/p>\n

Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> The scholarship covers participation in the London Honors semester abroad program. Recipients are selected for scholastic merit, intellectual engagement and financial need.<\/p>\n

Alva Ebersole Award\u00a0<\/strong> The award supports students with financial need in the UNC in Sevilla program, established by the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.<\/p>\n

William C. Friday Fund<\/strong> Established to honor University of North Carolina President Emeritus William C. Friday\u2019s visionary and sustaining role in the life of the University, the fund provides scholarships for students from North Carolina to participate in honors study abroad programs.<\/p>\n

Fry Study Abroad Scholarship <\/strong>This need-based scholarship is intended for students wishing to study abroad in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.<\/p>\n

Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> This scholarship was established in 2006 by Lee Stevens Gravely of\u00a0Rocky Mount<\/strong>\u00a0and her four children, all of whom are UNC alumni: Frances Gravely and Susan Gravely of\u00a0Chapel Hill<\/strong>, Steve Gravely of\u00a0Pittsboro<\/strong>\u00a0and Page Gravely of\u00a0Middleburg, Virginia.<\/strong>\u00a0The award honors Lee Gravely\u2019s late husband, alumnus Lloyd Lee Gravely, a World War II veteran and president of a family-owned export-import company, China American Tobacco Co. The fund provides annual study abroad scholarships, with a preference for North Carolinians.<\/p>\n

Anthony and Hope Harrington Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> Alumnus and former U.S. ambassador to Brazil Anthony Harrington of\u00a0Easton, Maryland<\/strong>\u00a0created this award in 2004 with his wife, Hope.\u00a0<\/strong>The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The Harringtons established the scholarship to honor former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, who taught at UNC in 1974 and 1975 and who received an honorary degree from UNC in 2001. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.<\/p>\n

Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship Program<\/strong> This scholarship was established in 2004 by gifts from Harris Teeter and the Dickson Foundation, Inc. Harris Teeter, the\u00a0Charlotte<\/strong>-based supermarket chain, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ruddick Corp., whose former chairman was the late Alan Dickson of\u00a0Charlotte<\/strong>, a Dickson Foundation trustee. The fund provides scholarships for students from North Carolina, with a preference for Harris Teeter associates and their children.<\/p>\n

Haywood Family Study Abroad Scholarship Fund\u00a0<\/strong> This fund was established by alumni Emmett and Hubert Haywood of\u00a0Raleigh<\/strong>\u00a0in 2007 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in summer, semester or yearlong study abroad programs.<\/p>\n

Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Award Fund\u00a0<\/strong> Alumnus Leonard Herring of\u00a0North<\/strong>\u00a0Wilkesboro<\/strong>\u00a0and his wife, Rozelia, established this scholarship in 2005 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in semester or year-long study abroad programs.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund <\/strong>Established in 2012, the Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund provides full funding for a five-week program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This scholarship is annually awarded to two students who have not previously traveled to Asia and who are currently in the Carolina Covenant Scholars program, which provides eligible high-performing, low-income students the opportunity to graduate debt-free.<\/p>\n

Honors International Experience Fund<\/strong> This fund supports scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.<\/p>\n

Suzanne Hynes Memorial Travel Award<\/strong> This award was created in 1986 by former UNC Board of Trustees member and alumnus James Hynes of\u00a0Charlotte<\/strong>\u00a0and his wife, Peggy, in memory of their daughter, Suzanne. The fund supports travel for study abroad.<\/p>\n

Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> This scholarship was established in 2001 by John and Jane Jacques of\u00a0Nashville, Tennessee<\/strong>, whose daughter Lindsay, a UNC alumna, participated in the Honors Summer in London and Oxford program. The fund provides scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.<\/p>\n

Joe Henry and Jenny C. Jenkins Study Abroad Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Joe Henry and Jenny Jenkins, longtime residents of\u00a0Dare County<\/strong>\u00a0and eastern North Carolina, established this fund in 2004 to support study abroad for undergraduates from eastern North Carolina \u2013 with preference for students from Bertie, Dare and Hertford counties.<\/p>\n

Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarships<\/strong> Carolina alumnae Mary Anne Johnson Dickson and Neal Johnson of\u00a0Charlotte<\/strong>\u00a0established the fund supporting these awards in 2002 to honor their late father, a banker and community leader in\u00a0Elkin<\/strong>. The fund offers need- and merit-based scholarships to North Carolina undergraduates, with a preference for students from Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.<\/p>\n

Sarah Quinn Laney Memorial Fund<\/strong> This fund supports scholarships for students participating in Honors-administered study abroad programs. Scholarship recipients must be residents of North Carolina. Preference is given to students who plan to study in France. If no students meet that qualification, the scholarship is awarded to female students studying in Europe.<\/p>\n

Grey Lineweaver Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> Alumna Grey Lineweaver of\u00a0Greensboro<\/strong>\u00a0established this scholarship in 2005, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched her gift. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.<\/p>\n

Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education<\/strong> Established in 2000, this fund provides scholarships for undergraduate students participating in Honors Study Abroad, field research or other Honors-administered off-campus academic programs.<\/p>\n

Charles A. McLendon Sr. Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> Alumnus Charles A. McLendon Jr. of\u00a0Charleston, South Carolina,\u00a0<\/strong>created the fund supporting this scholarship in 2004 to honor his late father of\u00a0Greensboro<\/strong>, a Burlington Industries executive who traveled extensively overseas. The fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and academic merit.<\/p>\n

Mealy Family Study Abroad Scholarship Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This fund was established by alumna Posey Mealy and her husband, Mark, of\u00a0Charlotte<\/strong>\u00a0in 2010 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in summer, semester or yearlong study abroad programs.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Phillips Ambassadors<\/strong> The Phillips Ambassadors program was established in 2005 with a generous gift from alumnus Earl N. \u201cPhil\u201d Phillips Jr. of\u00a0Chapel Hill<\/strong>, a business executive and former U.S. Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean, and his family. This scholarship, given annually to 25 to 50 students, combines a financial award for a study abroad program in Asia with an academic course that puts the experience in a greater global context.<\/p>\n

Richard S. Reynolds Honors Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> This fund provides merit study abroad scholarships for two to three Honors Carolina students each year. The scholarships provide a means of further stimulating the intellectual experience of Honors Carolina students through international travel.<\/p>\n

Frances and E.T. Rollins Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship<\/strong> Frances Rollins of\u00a0Durham<\/strong>\u00a0established this fund in 2008 in honor of her late husband, a UNC graduate and a former owner, board chairman and publisher of The Herald-Sun in Durham.<\/em>\u00a0The fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and academic merit.<\/p>\n

Horace J. Shumate Memorial Scholarship<\/strong> Carol Shumate of\u00a0Chapel<\/strong>\u00a0Hill<\/strong>\u00a0established the fund supporting this award in 2001 in honor of her late father, who worked in the foreign operations division of Loffland Brothers Drilling Co. for 24 years. A contract negotiator, Shumate traveled to remote locations around the world. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad and targets students who wish to pursue new academic or personal interests through international experiences.<\/p>\n

Study Abroad Awards<\/strong> The Study Abroad Office awards scholarships to some students from an award fund supported by donor gifts. The awards are based primarily, but not exclusively, on financial need.<\/p>\n

William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies<\/strong> This fund provides fellowships for students to develop language skills and gain practical, independent work experience in China. Recipients spend the spring semester in Beijing for intensive language study and course work on contemporary China, and then spend the summer in internships in Beijing or Shanghai.<\/p>\n

NORTH CAROLINA RECIPIENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alamance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Courtney Arena, a sophomore from\u00a0Graham<\/strong>, studied this summer in the University of Virginia-Yarmouk University Arabic languages program in Irbid, Jordan. A peace, war and defense and Asian studies double major, Arena received a Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Dylan McCue, a senior from\u00a0Saxapahaw<\/strong>, studied this summer in the UNC-Peking University Entrepreneurship program in Beijing, China. A journalism and mass communication major, McCue was chosen as a Phillips Ambassador.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Tish, a junior from\u00a0Graham<\/strong>, will study this fall in the Honors Semester in London program in England. A public policy major, Tish received an award from the Honors International Experience Fund.<\/p>\n

Rebekah Wells, a junior from\u00a0Mebane<\/strong>, will study for the 2014-2015 academic year at Universit\u00e9 de Grenoble in the Science in Grenoble Exchange in France. A chemistry major, Wells received an award from the Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Fund.<\/p>\n

Ashe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ashley Honeycutt, a senior from\u00a0West Jefferson<\/strong>, studied this summer in Dublin, Ireland, through Boston University\u2019s internship program. A history and peace, war and defense double major, Honeycutt received a Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award and a Study Abroad Award.<\/p>\n

Bertie<\/strong><\/p>\n

Areale Smith, a recent graduate from\u00a0Windsor<\/strong>, completed student teaching this spring in Hamburg, Germany, through the UNC School of Education. An education major, Smith received an award from the Joe Henry and Jenny C. Jenkins Study Abroad Fund.<\/p>\n

Brunswick<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tori Mitchell, a sophomore from\u00a0Leland<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Mitchell is an economics major.<\/p>\n

Buncombe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Virginia Callison, a junior from\u00a0Weaverville<\/strong>, received an award from the William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies for study in Beijing, China, this past spring and summer. Callison is an Asian studies and economics double major.<\/p>\n

Mary Everist, a senior from\u00a0Asheville<\/strong>, will study this fall in the Honors Semester in Cape Town program in South Africa. A public policy major, Everist received a Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship and an award from the Honors International Experience Fund.<\/p>\n

Henry Gong, a sophomore from\u00a0Asheville<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Gong is a biology major.<\/p>\n

Oliana Luke, a sophomore from\u00a0Asheville<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Luke is a political science and global studies double major.<\/p>\n

Madison Whalen, a junior from\u00a0Fairview<\/strong>, studied this summer in the Honors Rome program in Italy. A global studies and anthropology double major, Whalen received a Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Cabarrus<\/strong><\/p>\n

Noopur Doshi, a junior from\u00a0Concord<\/strong>, studied this summer in Santiago, Chile, through the IES Abroad Health Studies program. A biology major, Doshi received a Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Latin America.<\/p>\n

Alexis Strang, a sophomore from\u00a0Concord<\/strong>, will study for the 2014-2015 academic year at the University of Manchester in England. A global studies major, Strang received a Richard S. Reynolds Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Catawba<\/strong><\/p>\n

Max Lowman, a sophomore from\u00a0Newton<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Lowman is a chemistry and psychology double major.<\/p>\n

Chatham<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marlena Brokob, a senior from\u00a0Pittsboro<\/strong>, studied this summer in England in the Burch Field Research Science Seminar in London. A biology major, Brokob received awards from the Sarah Quinn Laney Memorial Fund and the Honors International Experience Fund.<\/p>\n

Ashley Gaines, a sophomore from\u00a0Siler City<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Gaines is an exercise and sport science major.<\/p>\n

Spencer Nelson, a senior from\u00a0Pittsboro<\/strong>, studied this spring at the UNC Institute for the Environment Thailand Field Site in Energy and Environment in Bangkok. An environmental sciences and biology double major, Nelson was chosen as a Phillips Ambassador.<\/p>\n

Amma Boakye, a junior from\u00a0Kings Mountain<\/strong>, will study this fall in the Honors Semester in Cape Town program in South Africa. A public policy major, Boakye received an award from the Honors International Experience Fund.<\/p>\n

Crystal Johnson, a junior from\u00a0New Bern<\/strong>, will study this fall at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Sarah Spencer, a sophomore from\u00a0Durham<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Spencer is a comparative literature and dramatic arts double major.<\/p>\n

Grace Ware, a junior from\u00a0Durham<\/strong>, will study this fall at International Christian University in Mitaka City, Japan. An English and Asian studies double major, Ware received a Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Forsyth<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zakary Brown, a junior from\u00a0Winston-Salem<\/strong>, will study this fall in the Honors Semester in London program in England. Brown received a Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship and an award from the Honors International Experience Fund.<\/p>\n

Michael Heubel, a sophomore from\u00a0Clemmons<\/strong>, studied this summer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A history and communication studies double major, Heubel received a Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Eva Lai, a senior from\u00a0Winston-Salem<\/strong>, studied this spring at National Taiwan University in Taipei. An exercise and sport science major, Lai received an award from the Suzanne Hynes Memorial Travel Fund.<\/p>\n

Mishana Sturdivant, a sophomore from\u00a0Winston-Salem<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Sturdivant is a journalism and mass communication and communication studies double major.<\/p>\n

Kexin Yin, a senior from\u00a0Winston-Salem<\/strong>, will study this fall at the Chinese University of Hong Kong through Kenan-Flagler Business School. A business administration major, Yin was chosen as a Phillips Ambassador.<\/p>\n

Guilford<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kierra Campbell, a junior from\u00a0Jamestown<\/strong>, studied this summer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A global studies and political science major, Campbell received a Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Matthew Lovejoy, a junior from\u00a0Greensboro<\/strong>, studied this summer in the UNC-Peking University Entrepreneurship program in Beijing, China. A business administration and economics double major, Lovejoy was chosen as a Phillips Ambassador.<\/p>\n

Gabrielle Scott, a senior from\u00a0Greensboro<\/strong>, studied this spring in the UNC in Sevilla program in Spain. A Romance languages major, Scott received an award from the Suzanne Hynes Memorial Travel Fund.<\/p>\n

Christine Son, a sophomore from\u00a0Greensboro<\/strong>, studied this summer with the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. A biology and global studies double major, Son received an award from the Suzanne Hynes Memorial Travel Fund.<\/p>\n

Henderson<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ailsa Bennett, a senior from\u00a0Hendersonville<\/strong>, studied this spring at Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile in Santiago. A global studies major, Bennett received a Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award.<\/p>\n

Iredell<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ryan Bremen, a junior from\u00a0Mooresville<\/strong>, studied this summer at King\u2019s College London in England. A mathematics major, Bremen received a Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Jackson<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maggie Monsrud, a sophomore from\u00a0Sylva<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Monsrud is a political science and global studies double major.<\/p>\n

Joseph Baldock, a senior from\u00a0Willow Spring<\/strong>, received an award from the William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies for study in Beijing, China, this past spring and summer. Baldock is a business administration major.<\/p>\n

Daniel Irvin, a junior from\u00a0Kinston<\/strong>, studied this spring in the Honors Semester in London program in England. A public policy and philosophy double major, Irvin received an award from the Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education.<\/p>\n

Mecklenburg<\/strong><\/p>\n

Imani Augustus, a senior from\u00a0Charlotte<\/strong>, studied this spring in the Honors Semester in London program in England. A political science and sociology double major, Augustus received a Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Mijal Bucay, a sophomore from\u00a0Charlotte<\/strong>, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Bucay is an economics and psychology double major.<\/p>\n
