{"id":7721,"date":"2014-04-17T13:12:38","date_gmt":"2014-04-17T18:12:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=7721"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:37:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:37:30","slug":"repneagrant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=7721","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers awarded 2014 NEA Art Works grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PlayMakers Repertory Company will receive a $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts Art Works grant for its fall 2014 repertory productions.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers is the professional theater company based in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The grant will support the theater\u2019s pairing of Stephen Sondheim\u2019s tour de force musical \u201cInto the Woods\u201d with William Shakespeare\u2019s magical \u201cA Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream,\u201d along with accompanying community outreach activities. The PlayMakers productions will be performed in rotating repertory Nov. 1 through Dec. 7.<\/p>\n<p>This is the seventh consecutive season PlayMakers has received NEA awards. Previous productions honored include \u201cA Raisin in the Sun\/Clybourne Park\u201d (2012-2013), \u201cThe Making of a King: Henry IV &amp; V\u201d (2011-2012), \u201cBig River\u201d (2010-2011) and \u201cThe Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby\u201d (2009-2010).<\/p>\n<p>Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to receive this new award from the NEA,\u201d said PlayMakers Producing Artistic Director Joseph Haj. \u201cIt is a terrific honor to be acknowledged by our peers for the work we are doing here at PlayMakers and the impact we are having in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joan Shigekawa, acting chairman of the NEA, said that NEA-supported projects such as PlayMakers\u2019 rotating repertory \u201cnot only have a positive impact on local economies, but will also provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in the arts, help our communities to become more vibrant, and support our nation&#8217;s artists as they contribute to our cultural landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for \u201cInto the Woods\u201d and \u201cA Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream\u201d are currently available a part of PlayMakers\u2019 2014-2015 Season subscription packages.<\/p>\n<p>Currently onstage at PlayMakers through April 20 is Sondheim\u2019s Tony Award-winning musical \u201cAssassins.\u201d The 2013-2014 season will conclude with \u201cHold These Truths\u201d by Jeanne Sakata April 23-27.
