Harvey Seim, professor and chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/marine.unc.edu\/\">department of marine sciences<\/a> in UNC\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences, led the wind resource assessment part of that study, in part to help identify viable lease block locations for offshore wind farms. The full report was published in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The two buoys, which will be deployed in late March to early April, are not only a key element of the wind research led by Seim\u2019s lab, but also will provide real-time data that will be transmitted via satellite to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/\">National Weather Service<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndbc.noaa.gov\/\">National Data Buoy Center,<\/a> both divisions of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The data will be used by global and national weather models thru NOAA and made available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndbc.noaa.gov\">http:\/\/www.ndbc.noaa.gov<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Located about 80 miles apart (one north of Cape Hatteras off Oregon Inlet, the other southwest of Cape Hatteras off Ocracoke Island), weighing 2,200 pounds and reaching 12 feet above the water, the buoys will be moored for about a year. These locations were identified to fill gaps in the historical wind data record and provide additional verification for the modeling effort. \u00a0Cameras attached to the buoys will take still images of weather conditions hourly during the daytime.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7538\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/buoys_marinescience3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7538\" alt=\"The buoys will be located about 80 miles apart (one north of Cape Hatteras off Oregon Inlet, the other southwest of Cape Hatteras off Ocracoke Island).\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/buoys_marinescience3-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The buoys will be located about 80 miles apart (one north of Cape Hatteras off Oregon Inlet, the other southwest of Cape Hatteras off Ocracoke Island).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/marine.unc.edu\/institute\/\">Institute of Marine Sciences<\/a> in Morehead City, an off-campus research and education center of UNC-Chapel Hill, provided help with outfitting the buoys. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ysisystems.com\/\">YSI Integrated Systems and Services<\/a> installed the electronics for the buoy instrumentation. Sara Haines, research associate in Seim\u2019s lab, will manage the buoy data and will oversee the deployment efforts. The UNC Coastal Studies Institute (UNC-CSI), an inter-university research institute located on Roanoke Island, is partnering with marine sciences on the deployment and maintenance operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe information from the buoys will fill a critical gap in our knowledge of the wind field offshore of North Carolina and will also provide real-time information on conditions in a very busy and dynamic area of the coastal ocean,\u201d Seim said. \u201cWe\u2019re excited to learn more about how the atmosphere and ocean interact off the North Carolina coast to
