Gidi Shemer in the biology department in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences has been recognized by the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy with an excellence in teaching award.<\/p>\n
The center’s Spirit of Inquiry awards were presented at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham on Dec. 4.<\/p>\n
For six years, the Pope Center has honored outstanding college-level instructors who have been nominated by their students and selected by a distinguished panel of judges. Shemer was nominated by UNC graduate Joey Patterson for his course, “Human Anatomy and Physiology.”<\/p>\n
Shemer<\/b> is a lecturer-adviser in biology, where he teaches 800 students a year, advises biology majors and coordinates undergraduate research in biology. Born in Israel, he received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Tel Aviv University and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in biology from The Technion in Israel. In 2005 he moved to UNC-Chapel Hill as a post-doc fellow and a visiting lecturer. Shemer has been the biology department’s adviser since 2009.<\/p>\n
