{"id":6958,"date":"2013-12-03T15:36:00","date_gmt":"2013-12-03T20:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=6958"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:27:37","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:27:37","slug":"barbourbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=6958","title":{"rendered":"Barbour\u2019s book honored by Modern Language Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A book by Reid Barbour, a professor in UNC&#8217;s department of English and comparative literature, and his University of Oxford colleague David Norbrook has been honored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mla.org\/\">Modern Language Association (MLA).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The book, <i>Translation of Lucretius, <\/i>volume 1 of<i> The Works of Lucy Hutchinson<\/i> (Oxford University Press) received an honorable mention for the MLA\u2019s Prize for a Scholarly Edition.<\/p>\n<p>The prize has been awarded each odd-numbered year since 1995.<\/p>\n<p>The award citation says: \u201cWith their inclusive introduction and impeccable textual work, Reid Barbour and David Norbrook have produced a deeply impressive edition of Lucy Hutchinson\u2019s sometimes labored, sometimes shimmering, always invigorated translation of Lucretius, a work that thanks to the editors\u2019 great erudition, can serve as a vantage from which to survey many of the ambitions and uncertainties of British intellectual life in the 1650s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barbour received his B.A. from UNC, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. He is the author of <i>Sir Thomas Browne: A Life<\/i>, <i>John Selden: Measures of the Holy Commonwealth in Seventeenth-Century England,<\/i> <i>Literature and Religious Culture in Seventeenth-Century England, <\/i>and <i>English Epicures and Stoics: Classical Legacies in Early Stuart Culture. <\/i>He is the co-editor of the forthcoming <i>Religio Medici<\/i>, volume 1 of the <i>Works of Sir Thomas Browne.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1883, the MLA and its nearly 30,000 members in 100 countries work to strengthen the study and teaching of languages and literature.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A book by Reid Barbour, a professor in UNC&#8217;s department of English and comparative literature, and his University of Oxford colleague David Norbrook has been honored by the Modern Language Association (MLA).
