It is the first time that one scholar has received dual honors in the same year \u2014 and in very different fields.<\/p>\n<p>Carter is the David G. Frey Distinguished Professor of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>He received the H. Colin Slim Award, which honors an article of \u201cexceptional merit,\u201d for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/02690403.2012.669927#.UoOiV-KFdWw\">\u201cMonteverdi, Early Opera and a Question of Genre: The Case of Andromeda (1620),<\/a>\u201d which was published in the Journal of the Royal Musical Association. Carter gives Monteverdi\u2019s libretto a fresh look in this examination of its dramatic content, its likely musical setting (now lost) and some fundamental questions of genre.<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Carter also won the Claude V. Palisca Award, which honors a score or scholarly text that \u201cbest exemplifies the highest qualities of originality, interpretation, logic and clarity of thought, and communication.\u201d The award was given for his edition of Kurt Weill\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kwf.org\/current-news\/current-news\/45-current-news\/661-johnny-johnson-wins-claude-v-palisca-award\">\u201cJohnny Johnson.\u201d<\/a> Originally produced by the legendary Group Theatre in 1936, \u201cJohnny Johnson\u201d (with book and lyrics by UNC playwright Paul Green) marked Weill\u2019s first Broadway show.<\/p>\n<p>The American Musicological Society was founded in 1934 to advance research in various fields of music.<\/p>\n<p>Carter&#8217;s latest book (co-authored with Richard Goldthwaite), &#8220;Orpheus in the Marketplace: Jacopo Peri and the Economy of Latye Renaissance Florence&#8221; (Harvard University Press), was selected as a &#8220;classical gem&#8221; in <em>The New York Times<\/em>&#8216; 2013 Christmas gift list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Musicologist Tim Carter of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has won two major awards from the American Musicological Society.
