{"id":6905,"date":"2013-11-21T14:33:58","date_gmt":"2013-11-21T19:33:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=6905"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:27:27","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:27:27","slug":"wows2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=6905","title":{"rendered":"WOWS Scholars inspire women faculty in the sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s22BkRKA1TU[\/youtube]The number of women in faculty positions in the sciences lags far behind the percentage of female graduate and undergraduate students nationwide.\u00a0 A campus-wide initiative at UNC called Working on Women in Science (WOWS) is trying to change that.<\/p>\n<p>WOWS, launched in 2007, is designed to foster the recruitment and advancement of women in the sciences and medicine. By designating women as UNC WOWS Scholars, the honor recognizes their roles as outstanding scholars, teachers, mentors and leaders as they work to advance the professional development of women in the sciences at Carolina.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6906\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-6906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jaye Cable<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The College of Arts and Sciences has recently named its two newest WOWS scholars \u2014 Jaye Cable and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geosci.unc.edu\/page\/donna-m-surge\">Donna Surge.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cable, chair of the curriculum for the environment and ecology and professor of marine sciences, is a marine scientist who studies the bio-geochemistry of subterranean estuaries.<\/p>\n<p>Surge, associate professor of geological sciences, is a paleoclimatologist whose research focuses on analyzing shells as climate archives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Surge said the WOWS program is meant to decrease the \u201cdisconnect\u201d between diversity at the faculty level and the student level.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cBoth undergraduate and graduate [populations] are more than 50 percent women, but it just doesn\u2019t translate to the faculty level.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6907\" href=\"http:\/\/user.physics.unc.edu\/~mcneil\/home.html\">Laurie McNeil<\/a>, professor of physics and astronomy, co-founded WOWS in 2007.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re enhancing the number of talented people that we have and moving them into positions of leadership, that can only be good for the university \u2026 \u00a0and in particular for our female students,\u201d McNeil said.\u00a0
