PlayMakers is transforming the Paul Green Theatre into an aquatic wonderland complete with indoor pool for productions of \u201cThe Tempest\u201d by William Shakespeare and \u201cMetamorphoses\u201d by Tony Award-winner Mary Zimmerman, to be performed in rotating repertory Nov. 2 to Dec. 8.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers is the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Special events associated with the show begin Oct. 21.<\/p>\n<p>The set devised for the dual productions showcases a pool filled with 15 tons of water over an open pit. Co-scenic and costume designers McKay Coble and Jan Chambers describe the design as \u201ca marriage of engineering and art.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2013\/10\/16\/playmakerspool\/\"> Read more about the design challenges Coble and Chambers faced.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both productions will feature music composed and performed by Ari Picker and Emma Nadeau, members of Triangle musical group Lost in the Trees. Their music has been performed from Duke Performances to New York\u2019s Lincoln Center. Their latest release, \u201cA Church That Fits Our Needs,\u201d was Wall Street Journal\u2019s Best Album of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tempest\u201d is the Bard\u2019s last play\u00a0and theater\u2019s first work of magical realism. In the aftermath of a shipwreck of his own conjuring,\u00a0the exiled Prospero wields magical powers, illusion and manipulation\u00a0to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place. His machinations bring about revelations, romance\u00a0and redemption on a mysterious island.<\/p>\n<p>With some of Shakespeare\u2019s most famous characters, including mischievous sprite Ariel, the monstrous Caliban and the towering role of Prospero, the stormy epic has been the subject of many stage and several screen interpretations.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers company member Julie Fishell will appear as Prospero, playing the role as a man in the fashion of \u2018pants roles\u2019 in opera and classic literature. Among many roles for PlayMakers, Fishell has been seen as Martha in \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,\u201d Fraulein Schneider in \u201cCabaret\u201d and \u201cHannah Pitt in \u201cAngels in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers\u2019 production is paired with \u201cMetamorphoses,\u201d written by MacArthur \u2018Genius\u2019 Fellow Zimmerman, and is based on Ovid\u2019s classical poems of the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Set in and around a pool of water, \u201cMetamorphoses\u201d presents the poetic myths of Midas, Orpheus and Eurydice, Eros and Psyche, and others to juxtapose the ancient and the contemporary in breathtaking storytelling and gorgeous imagery, exploring the timeless theme of love in all its forms. In \u201cMetamorphoses,\u201d the pool is central to the spectacle, used for swimming, bathing, frolicking and more; representing the River Styx to a raging sea.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6825\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6825 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/PlayMakersTempest-photo-006-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Left to right: Jeffrey Blair Cornell as Caliban, Julia Gibson as Stephano (standing) and Johh Allore as Trinculo. (photo by Michal Daniel)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMetamorphorses\u201d debuted in a critically acclaimed, record-breaking Chicago engagement that led to a Broadway production garnering creator Zimmerman the 2002 Tony Award. The Chicago Sun-Times described it as \u201caltogether transcendent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In New York, Broadway World said \u201cMetamorphoses\u201d is \u201ca theatrical memory for life \u2026 Do everything in your power to get a ticket!\u201d Time Magazine said the production \u201cshows that theater can provide not just escape but sometimes a glimpse of the divine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMetamorphoses\u201d won Drama Desk and Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play, as well as Tony nominations.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers performances will be in the Paul Green Theatre in UNC\u2019s Department for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Show times will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and on Sundays, Nov. 3, 10, 24 and Dec. 8, and 2 p.m. on Saturdays (except Nov. 2, 9 and 30) and Sundays (except Nov. 3.) There are no performances Nov. 9, 23, 28 or 30. Haj has directed previous epic productions for PlayMakers \u2014 \u201cThe Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby\u201d and \u201cThe Making of a King: Henry IV &amp; Henry V.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the plays, PlayMakers will host \u201cThe Vision Series-Directors in Conversation,\u201d a behind-the-scenes preview with the co-directors, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Paul Green Theatre. The event is free to the public. Participants share coffee and hors d\u2019oeuvres provided by series sponsor Jujube Restaurant, learn about the vision for the show and get a sneak peek at the sets and costumes. Additional funding has been provided by the North Carolina Arts Council.<\/p>\n<p>Galloway Ridge at Fearrington and Southern Season are co-producing sponsors for \u201cThe Tempest.\u201d <tt>The Catering Company is co-producing sponsor for \u201cMetamorphoses.\u201d<\/tt><\/p>\n<p>During its 2013-14 mainstage season, PlayMakers will also present Noel Coward\u2019s comedy classic \u201cPrivate Lives\u201d (Jan. 22-Feb. 9), the regional premiere of \u201cLove Alone\u201d (Feb. 26-March 16) and Stephen Sondheim\u2019s Tony Award-winning musical \u201cAssassins\u201d (April 2-20).<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers is based in UNC\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences.
