The play focuses on the last night in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers is the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Special events associated with the show begin Sept. 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mountaintop\u201d is a co-production with Triad Stage in Greensboro, combining the artistic forces of two of North Carolina\u2019s leading theater companies. The partnership offers the region a unique opportunity to experience this innovative and moving play throughout the fall, as the nation commemorates Dr. King\u2019s legacy and the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the March on Washington and his seminal \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech.<\/p>\n<p>Set on April 3, 1968 in Memphis, Tenn., at the Lorraine Motel, \u201cThe Mountaintop\u201d unfolds on the historic last night in the life of the civil rights icon. Show times will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and Sunday, Sept. 29; 2 p.m. Sundays and Saturday, Oct 5. Tickets are also available as part of PlayMakers\u2019 2013-2014 subscription packages.<\/p>\n<p>The play premiered in London to critical acclaim, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play (2009). A hit Broadway run followed, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. The Independent (London) called it \u201cbreathtaking, hilarious and heart-stopping.\u201d Variety said \u201cThe Mountaintop\u201d is \u201cemotionally powerful and theatrically stunning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The co-production will be directed by PlayMakers associate artist Raelle Myrick-Hodges, who helmed the theater company\u2019s hit production of \u201cA Raisin in the Sun\u201d last season and also directed \u201cTopdog\/Underdog\u201d (2008) and \u201cI Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady From Rwanda\u201d (2010).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6430\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/PlayMakersMountaintop2prc_mountaintop005-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6430\" alt=\"Lakisha May as Camae. The event is free and open to the public. Participants share coffee and hors d\u2019oeuvres provided by series sponsor Jujube Restaurant, learn about the vision for the show and get a sneak peek at the sets and costumes in progress. Roxboro St., downtown Durham;<\/li>\n<li>Sept 18, 19 and 20, 7:30 p.m.: preview performances;<\/li>\n<li>Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m.: opening night performance with complimentary gala party afterward;<\/li>\n<li>Sept. 24: an all-access performance for attendees with special needs, with sign language interpretation and audio description;<\/li>\n<li>Sept. 25 and 29: free post-show discussions with members of the creative team;<\/li>\n<li>Sept. 29, 2 p.m.: open captioned performance;<\/li>\n<li>Oct. 5: 1-6 p.m. UNC\u2019s Program in the Humanities presents \u201cThe History and Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement\u201d followed by a reception and the 7:30 p.m. performance of \u201cThe Mountaintop.\u201d Optional theater ticket is $28; tuition for the seminar is $75. Check <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmakersrep.org\/\">www.playmakersrep.org<\/a> for updates.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Woods Retirement Community is corporate co-producer for \u201cThe Mountaintop.\u201d Additional funding has been provided by the North Carolina Arts Council.<\/p>\n<p>During its 2013-14 main-stage season, PlayMakers will also present \u201cThe Tempest\u201d by William Shakespeare with \u201cMetamorphoses\u201d by Mary Zimmerman (performed in rotating repertory, Nov. 2-Dec. 8); Noel Coward\u2019s comedy classic \u201cPrivate Lives\u201d (Jan. 22-Feb.9); and the regional premiere of \u201cLove Alone\u201d (Feb. 26-March 16). The season concludes with Stephen Sondheim\u2019s Tony Award-winning musical \u201cAssassins\u201d (April 2-20).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers is based in UNC\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences.
