{"id":6105,"date":"2013-08-20T08:29:58","date_gmt":"2013-08-20T13:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=6105"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:24:38","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:24:38","slug":"wainwright","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=6105","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers presents world premiere with Loudon Wainwright III"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6106\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6106\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6106\" alt=\"Loudon Wainwright III (photo by Ross Halfin)\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/WainwrightLoudonby-rosshalfin-2-scaled.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loudon Wainwright III (photo by Ross Halfin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>PlayMakers Repertory Company will present the world premiere of \u201cSurviving Twin,\u201d written and performed by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III, Sept. 4-8.<\/p>\n<p>The professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill kicks off its 2013-2014 PRC\u00b2 series with the limited engagement event, which will be directed by PlayMakers producing artistic director Joseph Haj.<\/p>\n<p>PRC\u00b2 features innovative, topical presentations coupled with engaging post-show discussions with the creative artists following each performance.<\/p>\n<p>Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. nightly and 2 p.m. on Sept. 8 in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Ticket prices start at $15 and may be purchased at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmakersrep.org\/\">www.playmakersrep.org<\/a> or by calling (919) 962-PLAY (7529).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurviving Twin\u201d has been conceived by Wainwright as a posthumous collaboration combining and connecting his music with the writing of his late father, esteemed <em>Life Magazine<\/em> editor and columnist Loudon Wainwright Jr. Wainwright Jr.\u2019s slice-of-life observations were published from 1964 to 1985, when that periodical was a staple on every coffee table in America.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of this new concert-style theatrical piece is on fatherhood \u2014 being a father and having one. In \u201cSurviving Twin,\u201d Wainwright the musician explores the issues of birth, self-identity, loss, mortality, fashion and\u00a0pet ownership, inventively intertwining performance of his music with the stories written by his father.<\/p>\n<p>Wainwright was born in Durham, and his father attended UNC-Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>As a musician, Wainwright won a 2010 Grammy Award for his album \u201cHigh, Wide &amp; Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project\u201d and received two previous Grammy nominations. The album was named Best Album of 2009 by <em>NPR<\/em>\u2019s Ken Tucker (\u201cFresh Air,\u201d <em>Entertainment Weekly Magazine<\/em>) and appeared on \u201cyear\u2019s best\u201d lists for publications including <em>The Village Voice<\/em>, <em>FolkWax<\/em> and<em> fRoots.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His album \u201cOlder Than My Old Man Now,\u201d which provides musical influences for PlayMakers\u2019 production of \u201cSurviving Twin,\u201d was named one of the Top 10 Albums of 2012 by <em>NPR<\/em> and selected for its Top 50 Albums of 2012 by <em>American Songwriter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wainwright is a multi-talented performer. His film acting credits include Judd Apatow\u2019s \u201cThe 40 Year-Old Virgin\u201d and \u201cKnocked Up,\u201d for which he also recorded the soundtrack; Christopher Guest\u2019s \u201cFor Your Consideration,\u201d Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u201cThe Aviator\u201d and Tim Burton\u2019s \u201cBig Fish.\u201d Television acting credits include \u201cParks and Recreation,\u201d \u201cGrounded for Life,\u201d \u201cAlly McBeal,\u201d and a recurring role on \u201cM*A*S*H.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Mojo Magazine<\/em> has called Wainwright \u201cone of America\u2019s most astute lyrical commentators &#8230; compelling and emotionally overpowering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Time Magazine<\/em> said \u201cMr. Wainwright has proved to be far and away the most candid diarist amongst the singer-songwriters who \u2026 brought confessional poetry to popular song \u2026 [he] wrings more human truth out of his contradiction than any other songwriter of his generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ticket packages are available for PlayMakers\u2019 2013-2014 season.
