High school students worked with professional directors, choreographers and musicians this summer to produce a show\u00a0 through PlayMakers Repertory Company\u2019s Summer Youth Conservatory.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s production was Stephen Sondheim\u2019s \u201cSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.\u201d\u00a0 Joseph Haj, PlayMakers\u2019 producing artistic director, said it was chosen because Sondheim\u2019s work is \u201cfamously difficult to execute.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tom Quaintance, the director of the show and artistic director of Cape Fear Regional Theater, said the play is not only more difficult than those usually offered in high school theater but also darker, with more mature subject matter.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a unique opportunity for these kids to do a show that they probably wouldn\u2019t be able to do in any other context,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
PlayMakers\u2019 Summer Youth Conservatory has two tracks offered to high school students from the surrounding area\u2014Theatre Intensive and TheatreTech.\u00a0 Students in the Theatre Intensive program participate in five weeks of rehearsal and act in the show, and Theatre tech students are trained in scenic, costume, and lighting design while working with the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n
PlayMakers is based in the College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n
