\u201cFrom the Renaissance to the Modern World: A Symposium in Honor of John Headley\u201d is the title of free public programs Friday and Saturday (Nov. 11, 12) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n

The symposium honors John Headley, professor emeritus of history, who taught at UNC for 47 years until his recent retirement. Experts from far and wide will explore areas of scholarship to which Headley contributed during his career. Programs will be in Hyde Hall near East Franklin Street.<\/p>\n

Activities will begin with a reception at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by a 4:30 p.m. lecture, \u201cArt, Trent, and Michelangelo\u2019s \u2018Last Judgment,\u2019\u201d by John W. O\u2019Malley, <\/strong>University Professor at Georgetown University. The talk will be part of the Crossroads Lecture Series in the program in medieval and early modern studies.<\/p>\n

Saturday sessions will cover the Renaissance, the intellectual history of the early modern world, global history and Headley\u2019s scholarly contributions. Headley will conclude the symposium with his reflections.<\/p>\n

UNC sponsors are the program in medieval and early modern studies, history department, Institute for Arts and Humanities and Global Research Institute. Other sponsors are the Duke University Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies; James Weiss, associate professor of theology at Boston College and the Margaret and Price Zimmermann Fund.<\/p>\n
