{"id":5787,"date":"2013-06-24T14:46:48","date_gmt":"2013-06-24T19:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=5787"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:23:39","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:23:39","slug":"mountaintop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=5787","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers, Triad Stage collaborate on new play about Martin Luther King Jr."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This fall, two of North Carolina\u2019s leading theater companies,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmakersrep.org\"> PlayMakers Repertory Company <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.triadstage.org\">Triad Stage<\/a>, will co-produce the regional premiere of \u201cThe Mountaintop\u201d by Katori Hall. The play focuses on the last night in the life of Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n<p>It is the theater companies\u2019 first collaboration of this kind.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers, the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present the play as its main-stage season opener Sept. 18-Oct. 6. Then the play will be mounted in Greensboro by Triad Stage Oct. 20-Nov. 10.<\/p>\n<p>Set on April 3, 1968 in Memphis at the Lorraine Motel, the story unfolds on the historic last night in the life of the civil rights icon. A visitation from a mysterious woman leads King to confront his innermost thoughts and fears on the stormy evening before his assassination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mountaintop\u201d premiered in London (2009) to great critical acclaim, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play. A hit Broadway run followed, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. The Independent (London) called it \u201cbreathtaking, hilarious and heart-stopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PlayMakers-Triad Stage co-production offers the region a unique opportunity to experience the play throughout the fall. The production will be directed by PlayMakers associate artist Raelle Myrick-Hodges, who helmed the production of \u201cA Raisin in the Sun\u201d at PlayMakers last season.<\/p>\n<p>The PlayMakers performances will be in the Paul Green Theatre at UNC\u2019s Center for Dramatic Art, 250 Country Club Road in Chapel Hill.
