{"id":5694,"date":"2013-05-30T13:49:40","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T18:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=5694"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:23:11","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:23:11","slug":"syc2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=5694","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers\u2019 Summer Youth Conservatory to perform \u2018Sweeney Todd\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A cast of young student actors will perform Stephen Sondheim\u2019s Tony Award-winning \u201cSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street\u201d July 17-21 at the Center for Dramatic Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers Repertory Company, the professional theater in residence at UNC, will present the musical thriller as the culmination of its popular, award-winning Summer Youth Conservatory.<\/p>\n<p>Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. on July 17-20 and 2 p.m. on July 21 in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre inside the Center for Dramatic Art located on Country Club Road. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children under 18 and may be purchased by calling (919) 962-PLAY (7529), online at www.playmakersrep.org or at the PlayMakers box office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweeney Todd\u201d combines music, melodrama, murder and \u201cthe worst pies in London\u201d in an infamous tale based on Victorian urban legend. Todd, a bloodthirsty barber, seeks revenge on villainous Judge Turpin, with the assistance of an amorous accomplice, daffy pie-maker Mrs. Lovett \u2014 reaping dastardly results. Featuring Sondheim\u2019s legendary lyrical wit and musical storytelling, \u201cSweeney Todd\u201d is entertaining and surprising, filled with comic turns and chilling drama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweeney Todd\u201d was universally praised as an instant masterpiece and became a Broadway hit with the Tony Award-winning 1979 production featuring Angela Lansbury. The New York Times called the musical thriller a \u201cwhopping grisly yarn\u201d and a \u201cthumping good theatrical event.\u201d The 2005 Broadway revival with Patti Lupone also garnered Tony Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The musical was embraced by even wider audiences with Tim Burton\u2019s 2007 film version starring Johnny Depp and Sacha Baron Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweeney Todd\u201d will be directed by Tom Quaintance, artistic director of Cape Fear Regional Theatre in Fayetteville. Quaintance helmed previous conservatory productions including \u201cThe Mystery of Edwin Drood,\u201d A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream,\u201d \u201cThe Music Man\u201d and \u201cOliver!\u201d He also directed PlayMakers main-stage productions of \u201cThe Little Prince\u201d and co-directed \u201cThe Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby\u201d with producing artistic director Joseph Haj.<\/p>\n<p>The conservatory is a unique theater experience for young people: an educational and performance opportunity that includes working with professional directors, choreographers and musical directors at PlayMakers.<\/p>\n<p>The Summer Youth Conservatory has been honored by the North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) with the Constance Welsh Youth Theatre Award for excellence in performance, service of mission and community outreach. NCTC recognized the conservatory as \u201ca model program for youth theatre in North Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conservatory features three programs: Theatre Intensive and TheatreTech for high school students and Theatre Quest for middle-schoolers.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning June 17, high school actors in the Theatre Intensive program will have the opportunity to train, rehearse and perform \u201cSweeney Todd\u201d in PlayMakers\u2019 professional theater space.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, participants in TheatreTech begin a program in scenic, costume and lighting production. TheatreTech includes an in-depth series of technical coursework followed by a month-long apprenticeship with PlayMakers\u2019 professional staff.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers offers Theatre Quest, a series of week-long classes for middle school students, from June 17 to July 19. This program gives students the opportunity to train with professional artists in a variety of subjects including \u201cPrinciples of Acting,\u201d \u201cShakespeare and Stage Combat,\u201d \u201cActing for the Camera,\u201d \u201cMusical Theatre I: Solo Showcase\u201d and \u201cMusical Theatre II: ShowStoppers.\u201d Students can participate in one week of training or all five.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers for Theatre Quest are John Dreher (\u201cCabaret\u201d), Katja Hill (\u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play\u201d), David McClutchey (\u201cNicholas Nickleby\u201d) and Estes Tarver (\u201cTuesdays With Morrie\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>A limited number of spots are still available for Theatre Quest.
