Pitelka is replacing director Kevin Hewison.<\/p>\n<p>After having served as director of the Carolina Asia Center since 2005, Hewison is returning to Perth, Australia, to his alma mater, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murdoch.edu.au\/\">Murdoch University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pitelka is associate professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/asianstudies.unc.edu\/\">Asian studies department<\/a> and adjunct associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/history.unc.edu\/\">history department<\/a>. He joined UNC in 2010 after teaching for nine years at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxy.edu\/\">Occidental College <\/a>in Los Angeles, where he served as chair of the Asian studies department. A historian of pre-modern Japan, his publications include <em>Japanese Tea Culture: Art, History, and Practice<\/em> (2003), <em>Handmade Culture: Raku Potters, Patrons, and Tea Practitioners in Japan<\/em> (2005), and <em>What\u2019s the Use of Art? Asian Visual and Material Culture in Context<\/em> (2007, with Jan Mrazek).<\/p>\n<p>In 2011-2012, Pitelka was a fellow at the <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalhumanitiescenter.org\/\">National Humanities Center<\/a>. For the past 2 years he has been the inaugural director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/trianglejapan.wordpress.com\/\">Triangle Center for Japanese Studies<\/a>, a collaborative endeavor of Duke, NCSU, and UNC, established with the aid of a major grant from the Japan Foundation. Courses taught at UNC include \u201cAsia: An Introduction,\u201d \u201cFirst Year Seminar: Japanese Tea Culture,\u201d \u201cAncient and Medieval Japanese History and Culture,\u201d \u201cEarly Modern Japanese History and Culture,\u201d \u201cSwords, Teabowls, and Woodblock Prints: Exploring Japanese Material Culture,\u201d and \u201cSamurai, Monks, and Pirates: History and Historiography of Japan\u2019s Long Sixteenth Century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Asia Center, a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a core part of UNC-Chapel Hill\u2019s initiative to strengthen its position as a world-class international university.
