And Yole!Africa US is helping students in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and students at UNC come together to create positive change through cultural exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Students involved in Yole!Africa US work with Congolese youth to create art including music, choreography and videos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really made everything more real and connected.\u00a0 Rather than us just sending money to the Congolese, it was us actually interacting with them and seeing the benefit,\u201d said Lauren Gil \u201916.<\/p>\n<p>The organization was founded by UNC Music Professor Ch\u00e9rie Rivers Ndaliko, filmmaker and activist Petna Ndaliko and the students of Ndaliko\u2019s fall \u201912 First Year Seminar \u201cMaking and Marketing Music in the Digital Age.\u201d It is based on the understanding that by building a cultural bridge, American and Congolese youth can bring awareness to critical global issues unfolding in Congo and contribute to sustainable peace in one of the world\u2019s most conflicted regions.<\/p>\n<p>Rivers Ndaliko says students want to get involved because \u201cin many ways Yole!Africa US is an invitation to extend the idea of globally responsible citizenship to another part of the world where there\u2019s so much going on that\u2019s rich and that\u2019s exciting and that\u2019s also deeply troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deborah Kiserow \u201916 said her favorite part about the organization is the connections the students make. \u201cIt\u2019s like bonding with a purpose, which is just incredible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>To find out more about Yole!Africa US and its sister organization in Congo, visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yoleafrica.org\">www.yoleafrica.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i>[Text and video by Beth Lawrence \u201912] <\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cYole\u201d means come together.
