Steve Case<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Steve Case will speak, and he and four other luminaries will receive honorary degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the May 12 Commencement ceremony.<\/p>\n

Chancellor Holden Thorp will preside at the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in Kenan Stadium.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s honorary degree recipients are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Case<\/strong>, co-founder of America Online, chair of the Case Foundation and chairman and chief executive officer of Revolution, of Washington, D.C., who will receive a doctor of laws degree;<\/li>\n
  • Bernard Flatow<\/strong>, longtime promoter of Latin American cultural exchange, of Martinez, Ga., who will receive a doctor of laws degree;<\/li>\n
  • Joel Fleishman<\/strong>, professor, philanthropist and wine connoisseur, of Chapel Hill, who will receive a doctor of laws degree;<\/li>\n
  • Freeman Hrabowski,\u00a0<\/strong>president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, of<\/strong>Baltimore, Md., who will receive a doctor of laws degree; and<\/li>\n
  • Mary Pope Osborne<\/strong>, author of the \u201cMagic Tree House\u201d children\u2019s book series, of Goshen, Conn., who will receive a doctor of letters degree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The doctoral hooding ceremony\u00a0will be at the Dean E. Smith Center at 10 a.m. May 11. Dan Ariely, James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, is the speaker for the ceremony. No tickets are needed. Ariely, who received his master\u2019s degree and doctorate in cognitive psychology from Carolina, is a social scientist renowned for research that explains psychological processes determining day-to-day human decisions. Ariely writes the widely read Wall Street Journal column \u201cAsk Ariely\u201d and is the author of three New York Times bestselling books.<\/p>\n

    Graduates and guests are encouraged to park on the south side of campus accessed by Manning Drive off Fordham Boulevard and Columbia Street or Mason Farm Road. Shuttles are available from almost all south side lots.
