{"id":5359,"date":"2013-04-10T23:17:37","date_gmt":"2013-04-11T04:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/?p=5359"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:21:41","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:21:41","slug":"playmakers-spring-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=5359","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers presents world premiere of \u2018Spring Training\u2019 by Universes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/PlayMakersSpringTrainingposter-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5360\" alt=\"PlayMakersSpringTrainingposter copy\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/PlayMakersSpringTrainingposter-copy.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a>PlayMakers Repertory Company will present the world premiere of \u201cSpring Training,\u201d written and performed by international musical\/spoken word ensemble Universes, April 24-28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpring Training\u201d has been specially commissioned by PlayMakers and Carolina Performing Arts as part of the \u201cRite of Spring\u201d project celebrating the classic ballet\u2019s 2013 centennial.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers, the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, concludes its 2012-2013 PRC\u00b2 second-stage series with the production. PRC\u00b2 features innovative, topical plays coupled with engaging post-show discussions with the creative artists and other panelists following each performance.<\/p>\n<p>Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. nightly and 2 p.m. on April 28 in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Tickets are $15 to $40 and may be purchased at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmakersrep.org\/\">www.playmakersrep.org<\/a> or by calling (919) 962-PLAY (7529).<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cSpring Training,\u201d Universes uses \u201cThe Rite of Spring\u201d as a springboard to deconstruct rites of passage. The group will bring their unique talents to an exploration of Stravinsky\u2019s groundbreaking composition and create a daring 21<sup>st<\/sup> century soundtrack on ritual and revolution, breaking cultural barriers anew.<\/p>\n<p>Universes is known for being eloquent, edgy and entertaining. The Los Angeles Times wrote of the New York-based ensemble, \u201cThese performers are fierce, funny and bitingly intelligent.\u201d The Boston<em> <\/em>Globe called Universes \u201ca headlong explosion of poetry, percussion and multi-culti musical exploration that absolutely demands to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Triangle\u2019s INDY Week (formerly the Independent Weekly) gave Universes\u2019 2007 show at PlayMakers a rave review,<\/em> saying these are \u201cfolks you\u2019ve got to see and (particularly) hear\u201d with \u201cintricate rhythms and intricate stories, told by artists \u2026 as adept at polyrhythmic musical composition as they are at acting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Classical Voice of North Carolina called the troupe\u2019s last PlayMakers\u2019 appearance (\u201cThe Big Bang,\u201d 2010) \u201csome of the most exciting music ever created <i>a cappella <\/i>\u2026 [Universes] simply pours power and passion from the stage \u2026 Hip-hop or not this group <i>will<\/i> entertain you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group recently was honored as one of five finalists for the first Kennedy Theater Prize, the new $100,000 theater award established in honor of Senator Edward M. Kennedy and his interest in American history. One of the theater\u2019s most lucrative prizes, it was established in September by Kennedy\u2019s sister Jean Kennedy Smith, with the assistance of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner.<\/p>\n<p>Ticket packages are also currently available for PlayMakers\u2019 2013-2014 season.
