{"id":523,"date":"2011-10-22T10:04:29","date_gmt":"2011-10-22T10:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vandfam.net\/dev\/wordpressmu\/college\/?p=523"},"modified":"2011-10-22T10:04:29","modified_gmt":"2011-10-22T10:04:29","slug":"mau-a-malawi-stories-of-aids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=523","title":{"rendered":"Mau a Malawi: Stories of AIDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the fall of 2008, Andrew Finn Magill (cultural studies \u201909) began a personal project (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e2EBeYjNKs8\">watch video<\/a>) to fuse two of his passions \u2014 music and public health. After meeting with Irving Hoffman, the director of UNC Projects-Malawi, Magill connected with Malawian singer-songwriter Peter Mawanga and started \u201cMau a Malawi: Stories of AIDS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, almost three years later, \u201cStories of AIDS\u201d has inspired an entire series of projects, one of the most notable being a large-scale performance piece that will incorporate song, dance and dramatic monologue as well as documentary footage from Malawi. <a href=\"http:\/\/globalstudies.unc.edu\/mau-a-malawi-story-of-aids\/\">The show<\/a> will take place at Memorial Hall on Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. Admittance to the show is free, but donations are welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Another large component of the \u201cStories of AIDS\u201d project includes a documentary, \u201dIf My Eyes Could Sing,\u201d filmed and produced by Jon Haas (dramatic art \u201909).\u00a0 Both Haas and Magill emphasize \u201cthe message of this music is hope not defeat. Reinvigoration not resignation.
