The decadence of the nightclub under the sway of its flamboyant Emcee becomes a shattered mirror reflecting a society spiraling toward disaster with the rise of Hitler\u2019s Nazis.<\/p>\n<p>All performances will be in the Paul Green Theatre in UNC\u2019s Department for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Show times will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and Sunday, April 7; 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 and 20; and 2 p.m. Sundays. The show features music and lyrics by the legendary songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb. The production to be presented by PlayMakers was originally co-directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall (\u201cChicago\u201d) and directed by Sam Mendes.<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers\u2019 production will be directed by Joseph Haj, the theater\u2019s producing artistic director, who also helmed PlayMakers\u2019 2011 hit musical \u201cBig River\u201d featuring The Red Clay Ramblers.<\/p>\n<p>Haj calls \u201cCabaret\u201d \u201cone of the defining musicals of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt broke new ground in musical theater, intertwining social history between the World Wars with dazzling entertainment in new and dangerous ways,\u201d Haj said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCabaret\u201d will feature Obie Award-winner Taylor Mac as the lasciviously charming Emcee. He started the New Year Off-Broadway in the title role of Bertoldt Brecht\u2019s \u201cGood Person of Szechwan,\u201d in a performance The New York Times praised as \u201cmagnetic,\u201d calling Mac \u201ca terrifically gifted singer.\u201d His Puck in \u201cA Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream\u201d drew another rave review from The New York Times as \u201ccharmingly subversive.\u201d The reviewer enjoyed \u201chis cheeky interaction with the audience \u2026 infusing the evening with a spirit of friendly anarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Brescia, who will play Sally Bowles, was most recently seen in Theatre Raleigh\u2019s production of \u201cAugust: Osage County.\u201d She has appeared on Broadway as Donna in \u201cMamma Mia!,\u201d Elphaba in \u201cWicked\u201d and Amneris in \u201cAida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark Hartman is music director for the production. His Broadway credits include \u201c<em>Sondheim on Sondheim,\u201d \u201cAvenue Q,\u201d \u201cMiss Saigon\u201d <\/em><em>and \u201c<\/em><em>1776<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with \u201cCabaret,\u201d PlayMakers will host \u201cThe Vision Series-Directors in Conversation,\u201d a behind-the-scenes preview with director Joseph Haj, at 6:30 p.m. March 27. At the free public event in the Paul Green Theatre, participants share coffee and hors d\u2019oeuvres provided by series sponsor Jujube Restaurant, learn about the vision for the show and get a sneak peek at the sets and costumes in progress.
