{"id":504,"date":"2011-10-22T09:36:50","date_gmt":"2011-10-22T14:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vandfam.net\/dev\/wordpressmu\/college\/?p=504"},"modified":"2011-10-22T09:36:50","modified_gmt":"2011-10-22T14:36:50","slug":"sport-administration-class-donates-1000-to-unc-childrens-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=504","title":{"rendered":"Sport administration class donates $1,000 to UNC Children\u2019s Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2011\/10\/22\/sport-administration-class-donates-1000-to-unc-childrens-hospital\/\">sport administration<\/a> class taught by Richard Southall, associate professor of exercise and sport science, has a unique partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carolinarailhawks.com\/\">Carolina RailHawks<\/a>, a professional soccer team based in Cary.<\/p>\n<p>Currently in its second year, the partnership provides real-life work experience for UNC students. Students in Southall\u2019s sales and revenue production class apply their classroom learning through the real-world opportunity to work with and learn from sales executives with the Carolina RailHawks.<\/p>\n<p>A portion of every ticket sold by the UNC students was donated by the RailHawks back to the class. Then the class in turn chose to donate the money raised to a charity of their choice. The most recent class of 15 students sold over 300 RailHawks tickets as part of its month-long summer seminar class and chose to donate the $1,000 raised to the UNC Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Southall sees tremendous value in the partnership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe educational philosophy of the sales and revenue production seminar is \u2018bridging the gap between sales theory and real-world practice.\u2019 Our partnership with the RailHawks provides this vital link for our students. It is the proverbial \u2018win-win\u2019 situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The check was presented by the UNC students to Chris Ellington, executive vice president and CFO of UNC Health Care, at halftime of the RailHawks final regular-season home game on Sept. 24.<\/p>\n<p>The Carolina RailHawks team was established in 2006.
