{"id":4865,"date":"2013-01-31T17:02:10","date_gmt":"2013-01-31T22:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/college.web.unc.edu\/?p=4865"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:19:08","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:19:08","slug":"summer-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=4865","title":{"rendered":"UNC chooses Toni Morrison\u2019s \u2018Home\u2019 for summer reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cHome,\u201d the latest novel by Nobel laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, will be the 2013 summer reading book for incoming students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>A nine-member selection committee of students, faculty and staff selected the book from five finalists. Students on the committee described \u201cHome\u201d as an inspiration to first-year students in their academic, personal and social lives as they leave their homes to come to Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Putney, associate professor of Russian in the department of Germanic and Slavic languages and literatures and chair of the committee, said that students will be able to relate to \u201cHome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe committee agreed that this book should resonate with our incoming Carolina first-year students, as many of them will be leaving their own homes and making new homes and supportive communities for themselves,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>New students who will enroll next fall are expected and encouraged to read the book this summer and participate in small group discussions on the Monday before classes start in the fall. The program, now in its 15th year, aims to stimulate critical thinking outside the classroom and give new students intellectual common ground. An academic icebreaker, it encourages students to engage with the scholarly community and come to their own conclusions about the material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHome\u201d is the story of a man who joins the army to escape his too-small world, leaving behind his cherished and fragile little sister, Cee. After the war, his shattered life has no purpose until he hears that Cee is in danger.<\/p>\n<p>The other four finalists were \u201cBehind the Beautiful Forevers\u201d by Katherine Boo; \u201cThe Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao\u201d by Junot Diaz; \u201cSalvage the Bones\u201d by Jesmyn Ward; and \u201cThe Speed of Dark\u201d by Elizabeth Moon. The committee considered fiction and nonfiction.<\/p>\n<p>Since the program began in 1999, it has featured \u201cThere Are No Children Here\u201d by Alex Kotlowitz; \u201cConfederates in the Attic\u201d by Tony Horwitz; \u201cThe Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down\u201d by Anne Fadiman; \u201cApproaching the Qur\u2019an\u201d by Michael Sells; \u201cNickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America\u201d by Barbara Ehrenreich; \u201cAbsolutely American: Four Years at West Point\u201d by David Lipsky; \u201cBlood Done Sign My Name\u201d by Timothy B.
