{"id":4770,"date":"2013-01-15T20:52:04","date_gmt":"2013-01-16T01:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/college.web.unc.edu\/?p=4770"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:18:46","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:18:46","slug":"water-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=4770","title":{"rendered":"UNC to host symposium on water and energy Feb. 6-8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4776\" title=\"WaterInOurWorldlarger-graphic\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/WaterInOurWorldlarger-graphic-2-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" \/>Local and global experts will explore key issues related to water and energy, and present potential solutions to problems like climate change at a Feb. 6-8 symposium at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater and Energy in the Crosshairs:\u00a0Collisions and Synergies\u201d kicks off Feb. 6 with a screening of the documentary \u201cSwitch: The Future of Energy\u201d at the Varsity on Franklin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a panel discussion with energy industry representatives.<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 7 Christian Parenti, author of\u00a0\u201cTopic of Chaos:\u00a0Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence,\u201d will discuss the effects of the loss of biodiversity at 5:30 p.m. at the FedEx Global Education Center.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium will resume Feb. 8 at the Kenan Center at Kenan-Flagler Business School from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. It will include panel presentations on water-energy production and consumption, a discussion of Germany\u2019s renewable energy policy and an address about sustainable consumption and the power of individual behavior by Ted Howes of the World Economic Forum.<\/p>\n<p>The water and energy symposium supports \u201cWater in Our World,\u201d a two-year pan-campus academic theme that calls for the University and all of its members and resources to mobilize around water issues.<\/p>\n<p>This symposium is a pan-university collaboration among Kenan-Flagler\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cse.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Sustainable Enterprise<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Center for International Business Education and Research,\u00a0and UNC\u2019s\u00a0Center for European Studies,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cseees.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Slavic, Eurasian &amp; East European Studies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/africa.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African Studies Center<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ie.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute for the Environment<\/a>. Supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the European Union, the event is the third in a four-part series on global sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>All events are free.
