{"id":4748,"date":"2013-01-15T20:18:59","date_gmt":"2013-01-16T01:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/college.web.unc.edu\/?p=4748"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:18:42","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T14:18:42","slug":"alumni-haneslecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=4748","title":{"rendered":"Alumni&#8217;s work featured in art exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_4754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4754\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4754\" title=\"aintcho_hart_sharon\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/aintcho_hart_sharon-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aintcho, Sanctuary series, by Sharon Lee Hart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S NOTE: THE LECTURE WITH SHARON LEE HART AND ASHLEY OATES HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS.<\/strong> The John &amp; June Allcott Gallery and the Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series will present <a href=\"http:\/\/sharonleehart.com\">Sharon Lee Hart<\/a> (MFA \u201907) and <a href=\"http:\/\/ashleyoates.com\">Ashley Oates<\/a> (MFA \u201901) in an alumni exhibition from Jan. 17 to Feb. 7, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Hart will also deliver the Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture on Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Hanes Art Center, room 121.<\/p>\n<p>Hart has published her recent photographic work as <em>Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals.<\/em> Her poignant black and white portraits celebrate the lives of farm animals and make a passionate plea to animal lovers everywhere. The book reveals the unstoppable spirit of farm animals and pays tribute to their emotional, social, and intellectual lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my work I investigate the relationship between humans and other animals and how non-human animals are represented in a myriad ways in our culture,\u201d Hart noted in her project statement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4755\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4755\" title=\"Burrow_Warren_1\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Burrow_Warren_1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Warren I, Burrow series, by Ashley Oates<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Continuing with the themes of Hart\u2019s project, Oates uses photography and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gouache\">gouache<\/a> to construct <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Retable\">retables<\/a> that document, honor, transform and hold tight the many different heroic animals who find their way to her. These animals, at times powerless to the whims of humans, metaphorically represent many subjugated people who are powerless to the unreliability of those in control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis series, <em>Burrow<\/em>, uses photograms to explore the binary relationships of strength and fragility; truth and fiction; protection and vulnerability,\u201d Oates stated.<\/p>\n<p>An endowment established in 1983, through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes, supports the art department&#8217;s Visiting Artist\u00a0Series. This program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to \u00a0MFA students.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture is free and open to the public.
