She is also the inaugural Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Scholar for Carolina Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Kasson will deliver the <a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2012\/10\/16\/kassonadamslecture\/\">2012 E. Maynard Adams Lecture<\/a> in the Humanities and Human Values at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building (UNC School of Social Work). Her free talk is entitled, \u201cDramas of History and Vision: Three Contemporary Artists and the Necessity of the Arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A banquet honoring Kasson follows at the Carolina Inn. Advance registration for the banquet is required; the fee is $55. How can engagement with the creative arts enrich our lives and spark empathy, critical thinking and humanistic reflection?<\/p>\n<p>She will focus on three American artists and their works that raise questions about justice, citizenship, identity and aspiration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Artist Judy Chicago\u2019s multimedia display,<em> <\/em><em>\u201cThe Dinner Party\u201d<\/em> (1979).<\/li>\n<li>Playwright Tony Kushner\u2019s two-part \u201c<em>Angels in America\u201d<\/em> (1993).<\/li>\n<li>Choreographer Bill T. Jones\u2019 \u201c<em>Fondly Do We Hope \u2026 Fervently Do We Pray\u201d<\/em><em> <\/em>(2009).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Adams Lecture honors the late E. M. Adams, who was Kenan Professor of Philosophy at UNC.
