(photo by Dan Sears)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">While millions of fans worldwide remember the late Andy Griffith \u201949 as a beloved TV icon, a group of Carolina students have a personal connection to the actor and musician.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Since 1973, Griffith\u2019s philanthropy has provided critical tuition support for nearly 200 students majoring in music or dramatic art who possessed plenty of promise, but needed financial help to complete their Carolina education. He created the Andy Griffith Scholarship in 1972, adding his wife Cindi\u2019s name in the 1980s, to the fund in the College of Arts and Sciences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">The endowment, which has grown substantially thanks to the Griffiths\u2019 annual gifts and the fund\u2019s investment earnings, has produced annual awards ranging from $250 to $3,000 based on a student\u2019s need. In the past academic year, 25 students received Griffith Scholarship support.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cThe\u00a0Andy and Cindi Griffith Scholarship is one of the most meaningful awards the\u00a0department of dramatic art is\u00a0honored to give,\u201d said McKay Coble, chair.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cThe breadth of talent and standard of excellence exhibited by Mr. Griffith himself is an inspiration to our students.\u00a0We award this scholarship to outstanding majors who are not only bound together by the award but by their own commitment to excellence and service.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4081\" style=\"width: 294px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/griffith_andywhatitwaswasfootballcover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4081\" title=\"griffith_d\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/griffith_andywhatitwaswasfootballcover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The record, &#8220;What it Was, Was Football&#8221; thrust Andy Griffith into the national spotlight.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">In the department of music, where Griffith earned his degree, many of the very best students have been scholarship recipients, said Mark Katz, chair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cLike Mr. Griffith, these students have used their training in music and the liberal arts not only for their personal betterment but for the betterment of those around them. Andy Griffith will be remembered at Carolina not just for his talent and humanity, but for his devotion to the education of future generations,\u201d Katz said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Griffith Scholarship recipients remember the beloved actor, who died <\/span>July 3 at age 86, and the impact the scholarship has had on their lives:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Harry Shifman \u201974<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">In summer 1974, Harry Shifman, a new Carolina graduate and aspiring actor, caught a ride to New York City and slept in Washington Square Park that night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cThe next day I found an apartment and an actor\u2019s job \u2014 as a waiter,\u201d said Shifman, who within six months founded the PoorMan\u2019s Theatre in a loft in Chelsea.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4083\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/shifman_harry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4083\" title=\"shifman_harry\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/shifman_harry-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harry Shifman &#8217;74 says the Andy Griffith Scholarship helped with his theater career.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">He has been directing, playwriting and teaching theater ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cFor the past 20 years, I have been blessed to direct and teach the little geniuses at LaGuardia Performing Arts in the city, the \u2018Fame\u2019 school, helping to make possible for others that which Andy Griffith helped to make possible for me,\u201d said Shifman, whose own students include Adrian Grenier of HBO\u2019s \u201cEntourage.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cWere it not for the generosity of Andy Griffith, and my selection by the faculty, I doubt that I would have been able to continue at college that year. That scholarship provided the boost I needed, both in confidence and financially to complete my education,\u201d Shifman added.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Susanna Rinehart \u201986 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cThe passing of Andy Griffith led me to think of how deeply honored I was to receive the Griffith Scholarship as a dramatic art major. I knew then, as a young aspiring actress, what a profound honor and encouragement the award represented,\u201d said Rinehart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u201cI am now associate professor of theater and cinema at Virginia Tech, continuing to perform, direct and train the next generations of young American actors. I hope Mr. Griffith would be proud.
