The other is Maffitt, a legendary blockade runner who grew up in Fayetteville, became a U.S. Navy midshipman at age 13 but enlisted in the Confederate Navy when North Carolina seceded.<\/p>\n<p>Simpson is Kenan Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing at UNC&#8217;s College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Tony Award-winning band the Red Clay Ramblers. His previous books include \u201cThe Coasts of Carolina: Seaside to Sound Country,\u201d \u201cGhost Ship of Diamond Shoals: The Mystery of the Carroll A. Deering\u201d and \u201cInto the Sound Country: A Carolinian\u2019s Coastal Plain,\u201d all from UNC Press.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3810\" title=\"Simpson_BlandTwoCaptionsFromCarolinabookcover\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Simpson_BlandTwoCaptionsFromCarolinabookcover-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/>The reading and discussion will take place in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room of Wilson Library.
