{"id":3753,"date":"2012-09-12T08:20:10","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T13:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/college.web.unc.edu\/?p=3753"},"modified":"2024-07-02T13:31:46","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T13:31:46","slug":"usnews12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=3753","title":{"rendered":"UNC ranks 5th among national public universities for 12th year in a row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks fifth among the nation\u2019s best public universities for the 12<sup>th<\/sup> consecutive year, according to <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The rankings appear in the 2013 \u201cAmerica\u2019s Best Colleges\u201d guidebook and at www.usnews.com beginning Sept. 12.<\/p>\n<p>Among national public universities, UC-Berkeley ranked first, followed by UCLA and Virginia (tied for second), Michigan (fourth) and UNC (fifth); the same order as in last year\u2019s list.<\/p>\n<p>Other U.S. News rankings results for UNC included the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> among national public universities<\/strong> for the 8<sup>th<\/sup> consecutive year and 17<sup>th<\/sup> overall in <strong>\u201cGreat Schools, Great Prices,\u201d<\/strong> based on academic quality and net cost of attendance for a student\u00a0 receiving the average level of need-based financial aid in 2011-2012. Forty-one percent of UNC students received need-based aid in 2011. Carolina meets 100 percent of the documented need of students qualifying for need-based aid who apply on time.<\/li>\n<li>A 97 percent average<strong> first-year retention rate<\/strong> for the third consecutive year<em><em>.<\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<li>A 90 percent <strong>average six-year graduation rate<\/strong> \u2013 5 percentage points better than U.S. News predicted for the second consecutive year. (UNC\u2019s current four-year rate is nearly 81 percent.)<\/li>\n<li>Tied for 13<sup>th<\/sup> with Wake Forest University for a <strong><strong>\u201cstrong commitment to teaching.\u201d\n<p><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Listed among outstanding undergraduate programs with<strong> \u201cA Focus on Student Success.\u201d<\/strong> Carolina was cited for exemplary<strong> first-year experience<\/strong> (seminars and other programs bringing small groups of students together regularly with faculty and staff),<strong> undergraduate research\/creative projects<\/strong>,<strong> study abroad<\/strong> and<strong> service learning<em>.\n<p><\/em><\/strong>Click here for the full release.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks fifth among the nation\u2019s best public universities for the 12th consecutive year, according to U.S. News &amp; World Report.
