{"id":3619,"date":"2012-08-23T09:55:03","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T14:55:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/college.web.unc.edu\/?p=3619"},"modified":"2024-07-02T13:31:18","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T13:31:18","slug":"playmakers-prc2-season-opens-with-an-iliad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/?p=3619","title":{"rendered":"PlayMakers\u2019 PRC2 season opens with \u2018An Iliad\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3620\" title=\"PlayMakersIliadposterimage\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/PlayMakersIliadposterimage-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" \/>PlayMakers Repertory Company\u2019s innovative, intimate PRC <sup>2 <\/sup>second-stage series returns this fall with &#8220;An Illiad&#8221; opening Sept. 5-9.<\/p>\n<p>This is the sixth season for PRC<sup>2<\/sup>, where each presentation combines an intriguing, topical production coupled with engaging post-show discussions with the creative artists.<\/p>\n<p>Playwrights Lisa Peterson and Tony Award-winner Denis O\u2019Hare (known for his role in HBO\u2019s \u201cTrue Blood\u201d) were honored with a special citation from the 2012 Obie Awards for bringing a modern sensibility to Homer&#8217;s epic tale of mighty warriors, gods and goddesses, and the face that launched a thousand ships, without losing the grit, glory, bloodlust and poetry that have held audiences enthralled through the ages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis contemporary take on \u2018The Iliad\u2019 is the perfect complement to last season\u2019s PRC<sup>2<\/sup> finale \u2018Penelope,\u2019 which was a fresh look at \u2018The Odyssey,\u2019\u201d said Joseph Haj, PlayMakers producing artistic director.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Chicago Sun-Times<\/em> called the play \u201cexplosive, altogether breathtaking \u2026 brilliantly meshes past and present calamity, with touches of the most caustic dark humor suddenly shifting into unimaginable pathos.\u201d <em>The New York Times<\/em> said \u201cAn Iliad\u201d is \u201cspellbinding \u2026 smartly conceived and impressively executed \u2026 an age-old story that resonates with tragic meaning today.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3621\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3621\" title=\"JulieBillEngagement\" src=\"https:\/\/collegearchive.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/07\/Dooley_RayphotobyRachelGarrison-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ray Dooley (photo by Rachel Garrison)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>PlayMakers\u2019 production will feature longtime acting company member and audience favorite Ray Dooley in a solo performance portraying a variety of characters. Dooley was featured in last season\u2019s productions of \u201cA Number\u201d and \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 6 p.m. on Aug. 27, Dooley and Haj will appear at McIntyre\u2019s Books at Fearrington Village in Pittsboro. In addition to discussing \u201cAn Iliad,\u201d Haj will give an overview of the new season.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Berger, founding artistic director of New York\u2019s Red Bull Theater, will direct. Under his leadership, Red Bull produces In-The-Raw play development workshops and the Obie Award-winning Revelation Reading Series. Berger also directs extensively at other New York theaters and across the country, working with actors such as Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Ashley, Michael Learned and among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn Iliad\u201d will be performed at 7:30 p.m. nightly and 2 p.m. on Sept 9. Open captioning will be available at the 7:30 p.m., Sept. 7 performance. Tickets are $15-$40 or may be purchased as part of the theater\u2019s 2012-2013 season packages. PRC\u00b2 shows are presented in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road.<\/p>\n<p>Also in this season\u2019s PRC<sup>2<\/sup> lineup are Obie Award-winner \u201cAnd God Created Great Whales,\u201d composed and performed by Rinde Eckert (Jan. 9-13, 2013) \u00a0and the world premiere of \u201cSpring Training\u201d by spoken word ensemble Universes (April 24-28, 2013). PlayMakers\u2019 main-stage season opens Sept. 19 with 2010 Tony Award-winner for Best Play \u201cRed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PlayMakers is the professional theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
